I need to help my daughter's friend haul some stored personal stuff from Missoula back to Spokane so I rented a 6x12 U-Haul today. Two mountain passes in the Rockies. Excited to see how the little oiler pulls.

Pulling will be nice :-)
I was never comfortable without trailer brakes, so just make sure you get used to her...

Interstate all the way. Not a real heavy trailer but I ordered a bigger one than I needed as my experience shows a dual axle bigger trailer really is more stable than a little single axle. I will snap some shots and post them.

I just helped a friend move from seattle to virginia going the exact same route plus a couple more thousand miles. She had a Ford escape pulling a slightly smaller but packed out u-haul trailer. I was suprised by how well it did. Had zero problems, so I know you shouldnt even give it a second thought.

We loaded a 6x12 U-Haul nearly to the ceiling:

The CRD did great! Handled the passes no problem, plenty of torque on the highway, never fell out of overdrive. We got about 17mpg going 65mph just locked up into 5th.

Wow, you did fill it! I won't but again, I think the larger trailer is a steadier tow.

Hi Dave,

Make sure you have enough tongue weight. Pictures 9430-9432 are us pulling into some industrial park parking lot about 20 miles into the highway trip to repack and rebalance the load to be more front-heavy... It swayed like a female dog before we rebalanced it.

When I towed my 2,000 lb trailer cross country, I hardly knew it was back there. Went up to 75 mph like that.

Did any of you have to use any kind of weight distributing hitch system?
If so, what system did you use?
I want to be able to max my towing capacity at 5-6000 lbs but I don't
know what kind of hitch system to use.

Flash

I recently bought a 99 17' Casita travel trailer. They intentionally have a heavy tongue weight of 365 pounds. The Liberty requires a WDH for over 300 pounds. My trailer weights about 3000 pounds loaded. I bought a Draw Tite single bar WDH as it's weights limits, 400 pounds tongue and 4000 total, are more suited for my lighter trailer. For the weight your talking about you'll want a double bar model. My 370 mile ride home was very nice with both the WDH and anti sway bar even with speeds up to 80 MPH  My only problem was lack of power going up big hills or small mountains in PA. My air in the fuel really showed up big time  I could not always keep it over 62 and a couple times over 52 and both of those are shift points. When they did my F31 the tech also said I got the F37 flash  Mine supposably came that way but they made it worse. Shifts are now happening at the drop of a hat

Cowcatcher.

TONGUE WEIGHT, TONGUE WEIGHT, TONGUE WEIGHT :!: It's very important to have it correct. Recommended is 10 to 15% of your total weight on the tongue. Your problem is you'll most likely not have a WDH (Weight Distributing Hitch) to raise the hitch after you get the correct weight. So your rear will be dragging and head lights will be pointing towards the stars  Be on guard for the tail wagging the dog  It will want to happen most going down hill  I think most U-HAULS have surgue brakes> Good luck :)

All
If you turn the spare tire mount over you'll get more room for the trailer hitch as it will be highter and the bottom of the tire will be further in

For our U-Haul trip, we didn't use sway control or weight distribution. I had a Equal-i-zer hitch but the U-Haul trailer we got on pickup day had a single pole tongue and not an A-frame, soooo...

For the 26' Rockwood travel trailer we ordered, we'll be using a Hensley Arrow hitch. We should be picking it up around the beginning of September.

Do you guys keep it in the overdrive mode all the time or do you turn it off especially in the mountains?

Thanks for the concern Joe. I am not too worried about the tow having towed often with all sorts of trailers and tow rigs, including a '73 Honda Civic. This load is under 2K empty and will not be much over 2K loaded. I could likely have used the smallest trailer they had but experience has taught me that longer and double axle is better. The worst thing I ever towed was a single axle pop up tent trailer. Hated it.

Copngrats on the Casita. I am sure you will love it. Now I know why you were looking for that brake wire!!!

I only turned it off going up steep inclines..usually it will down shift though before you notice anything...

WOW!!!!

What a great tow rig. I shifted down on a couple of steep stretches (Killed OD) but mostly but mostly I let it do its own thing. The trailer weight wa said to be around 2K with surge brakes. I added perhaps 1.2K for the trip back. My hand calculated mileage was about 17.5 and my EVIC, starting from a reset, was 18.7. The trailer was would have been considered 16' from RV standards as that was the length with the tongue.

I wouldn't think twice about a larger tow.

The few times I have pulled anything heavy enough....if it kicked out of OD on its own and I was heading up a long hill, I would go ahead and lock out OD so it wouldnt shift back and forth going up the hill. When I got to the top I would turn it back on.

Pulls like a good mule doesnt it? :D
