I just cleaned the MAP sensor and discovered a second cover that is conprised of two section that "bind" in the middle. Each section is held by 3+ screws.
Question:
Do I need this cover? there are wires that go from the top of the motor thru this cover and then they are covered by the main cover (the that says JEEP 2.8 CRD)
thanks...

That cover is the first thing a ditched when I purchased my CRD. A fancy cover that contains engine heat and noise, not on my Jeep. Actually I purchased the CRD partly because I like the sound of it running.

Don't need it. Personally I can't even tell the difference on or off.

yeah, I didn't know if it realy had any purpose at all...my TDI runs with no cover as well. MAP cleaning will be a lot easier as well.
Thanks for your input.

WAIT A MINUTE!!!!! I don't think everyone carfully read your email. You can ditch the plastic CRD cover but that other think is a wire tray that keeps the wire harness off the hot parts of your motor. I would not discard that.

OK, the wire tray is the one I'd like to live without, or maybe not.

Did you purposely take the wire tray off or did you never have one?

I guess I am more risk adverse than others. I don't find the tray a problem and there seems to be enough stuff on the CRD that can go south on you without adding to the problem by stripping parts off without some consideration as to why they were there in the first place.

I guess this "sub-tray" is designed to keep all the wires away from the top of the engine. I does make harder to get to the MAP sensor and such, but again, I will leave it there. The top tray, I think, is just for the show - maybe some sound reflection, but that is about it...

Yep.. I wouldn't remove the "sub-tray". Somebody went through a lot of trouble to suspend those wires/hoses above the motor.. must be a reason. Mine was semi-unbolted when I cleaned my MAP sensor.. so I could easily just 'shimmy' up the sub-tray over the posts that it sits on. That made it easier for me to access the one bolt needed to loosen the MAP sensor. The large plastic "2.8 CRD" cover is simply for noise reduction. It also traps heat under it.. which may or may not be a good thing. I took mine off this last week and it seems to sound louder and my ProVent lines seem to be less hot now that they are not under the cover.

I just cleaned the sensor, but it would be interesting to see if the tray could be modified to allow sensor removal W/O tray removal.

I've never had to completely remove the cable tray, just pop it off the stud in back to get at the MAP sensor

The service writer at the Bloomington, Indiana Jeep dealer made me bring my engine cover in before he'd release the Jeep to me. He said it was a "vital part of the motor". What a dork.

Stan I remember you had to drive home to get the cover because you got lectured that it was vital to the motor functioning. I have told your story over again to my techs and we want to get an autograph of this dork!

You'll find him at the Bloomington, Indiana Jeep dealership sitting at the right hand of God...at least in his mind...
