Seriously think about putting a Detroit True Trac in there. It is a gear driven LSD with preload...great offraod with better road manners. You can put the same in the front later. The advantage is that it replaces the stock carrier and is stronger. The PowerTrax uses the stock carrier...I think that is the weak point...

I had the PowerTrax in the rear of my 2002 and a DTT in the front...The front gave me no problems...the rear destroyed itself...replaced the whole rear axle (it did last quite a while and was used offroad).

Jeepster,

If yours is doing what you said, its on its way out.

I would take the full locker instead of lunchbox if I could.

True tracs are kinda cool. Guy I wheel with has a CJ-7 on 37" boggers with a detroit in the rear and a true trac in the front. It works for him...although he would prefer a detroit up front. It's weird, you can watch him try to make a climb, and the front wheel that's in the tough spot doing all the work won't just sit there like an open diff, but it kinda jerks about and spins intermittently, until he really gets on it, at which time it puts traction to that tire long enough to pull him up and over the obstacle. He does have to really get on it though for it to lock up. Not really a problem with his 350 though :).

Not sure about the newest JK versions, but the TJ rubicons have a worm gear driven limited slip (Same as a detroit true-trac) in the rear when it wasn't locked. You could get into some pretty sticky situations in the rubicon without even engaging the lockers...and then when you engage just the rear.

If someone was really worried about road manners, this would be great. But if you have smaller than 35" tires, a lunchbox is probalby sufficient, and much easier on the budget. And if you decide that you don't like it, you can remove it and sell it to someone who will like it. If you're going to replace the whole carrier, might as well just get a detroit locker!!

Its been in there around 10k miles but I bought it used from a lost member that also put around 10k on it. It looked good as new when I installed it and a I put new springs in it too..

Ill wait and see how it goes.

Just to add, if I use full time on dry pavement or when it rains, I cannot tell I have a locker at all. :)

I just looked at randy's ing and pinion site and the price of an Auburn LSD and a Powertrax are within 20 bucks. I love the Auburns that I have put in my pickups and my scrambler. They do great off road and on the street have very nice manners. I have never had any problems with short wheelbase and Auburns. I have had lockrights and other lunchbox lockers and they do make noise and grab in corners sometimes. It was fine for wheelin, but I like the smoothness of the Auburn. I'm gonna see bout putting on ein my KJ as my Xmas present to myself.

Save yourself the money and trouble and get a Detriot TT or full Detriot locker, you'll be happier in the long run,or if you have the money go with a ARB air locker(the best).I'd stay away from anything with clutches(Auburn) since they will wear out after time and need special additives.

Guys:

Thanks for all the advice and information. I like what I've been reading about the Detriot TrueTrac's. But getting information on them has not been easy. Do they make one for the Chrysler 8.25" 27 spline?

If so, does anyone sell it, and how much is it? Finally, is it a job I could do myself?

P.S.
If they make one for the front differential, would that and 31"x10.5" be a leathal combination for my front end components?

Well first of all the KJ's 8.25 is 29 spline, and yes they make one for it,about $450,they also make one for the XJ's 8.25(27 spline).

And yes they make one that works in the front D30A in the KJ,I have one and love it,use the D30 27 spline one.

As far as holding up to 31" tires.no problem I run 265/75R16 Trxus MT's which are 31.9" tall and wheel my KJ pretty hard.

As far as doing by yourself, have you done a gear set up before? If not I would leave it to the pro's to do,can be very time consuming and a royal pain if your not familier with doing gear work.

Reider Racing has great prices

I think you have to call for the DTT for a 8.25" but they are out now

x2 Auburns are nice for making a mild muscle car hook up better and not effect the cornering with over/under steering and such, but unless money isn't an issue, they're a waste of it (money that is). They use friction discs, or clutches, which either wear out with hard use or over time, or can be totally destroyed if you sit there and do a burnout with them. If you were trying hard to get up and obstacle that required some tire spinning, you could easily heat the auburn up and accelerate the wear....even ruin it just on one obstacle depending on tire size and motor size. Also, auburns are limited slips, but you still have spider gears....and when the clutches wear out, you have an expensive open diff.

The benefit of the worm gear driven limited slips, like the detroit true trac is that there are no clutches, and there are no spider gears!! The two axle shafts are coupled together with a worm gear drive system, that allows one axle shaft to spin at a rate faster than the other, but no matter what, both will have to spin. It won't let one tire sit still while the other one smokes like an open diff. And, as the torque you apply to it increases and it has to work harder, it reduces the differential between the two axle shafts...kinda locking them up temporarily.
