Why not 225/75R16

All,

How come no one is running 225/75R16? They are the same height as the 245/70's but with a much better selection of MTs. Thanks in advance for the responses.

There is nothing wrong with a LT 225-75 MT

Not that much of a diff between it and a 265 when you look at tread width instead of (ballon) section width. 265 is 2" wider at section, 1" at tread and can cause a whole host of problems if the rig ain't set up right.

LT225-75 has:

Better price most times

More tread width for the money

Stiffer ride

Better for non-lifted

Perfect to bumpstop out instead of binding the inside fender/body when using a locker so you don't break an axle.

Tire diam helps prevent broken axles

Great choice...Nothing wrong with it.

I ran them on a second set of wheels.

I ran 225/75R16 MT/R's for about 2 years before I lifted my KJ.

I actually read on one of the jeep forums that the narrower tires dig in better in mud and snow. (Either here or JeepKJCountry)

The CRD's came with that size from the factory.. So they are just fine for sure.

And yes Skinny tires do dig better in snow and mud. Whenever I get around to lifting our CRD I think I will get a second set of rims and tires for offroading I will probably try 215/85/16's

Probably these.

I have been wanting to try those retreads anyhow and using them for wheelin tires should be a good test, since I would put them on to drive there anyhow.

Not an MT..but the General Grabber AT2 is real affordable in the 225/75 size.

They don't "dig" better...They sink.

The ultimate test is to park on a fresh asphalt driveway when its hot. You'll see quickly that narrow tires do sink because they don't spread the wealth like a wider tire does.

Float or sink "dig" depends on the person and situation.

I drove all over my driveway with trucks and liberty but it was a SUBARU with 185's that sunk and left a depression to be filled and rolled. Maybe thats why they beat a Jeep in the snow and Ice.

Hey Ronnie, Those MT's are still heavy in that size, make some noise, and hurt mpg. They do the job well.

I suppose the tread pattern is what determines how much a tire "digs" the narrower tires will have a higher ground pressure though...sorry about your driveway:lol: Same reason VW bugs go in the snow.. skinny tires, all the weight right on top of them. I actually prefer skinnier tires for the most part, unless you are on sand...the KJ isnt light enough to do much "floating"

Smaller tire contact patch...more pressure per square inch...

Across the pond, they tend to run tall skinny tires...

Airing down...the advantage is the extra "length" the procedure renders...

Wider is better is some instances...Skinnier might be in other instances...

Wheel weight can also be a concern...

Fitment is another concern...

I ran 265/75/16s and then 235/85/16s...both did fine...really hard to tell the small diff in width or heigth...

Looking back, I would put the deciding factor on gaining heigth and sacrafice a bit of width...especially with our Lower Ball Joints :wink:

I think some of the tire issue comes from us old timers. We were raised driving Muscle Cars and most had as wide a tire as you could fit in the wheel well. In fact Pontiac used it as part of their advertising in the late 60's and early 70's they called it wide tracking. So we all wanted to put as fat a set of meats on the ground and leave as wide a black stripe on the road when we did a burm out. In fact I even drove a dune buggy with F60-14 on it. It was so lite that you couldn't run any more the 8lbs of air in the tires or they got too hard to stick on the road. Just my $.02 worth :twisted:

RUSH345 you are right about wanting to run as wide as possible, I remember having the first set in my area of L 60 X 15 on a 69 Cougar so that is part of what I like,the other part is the way skinny tires look on a Liberty its like they are on stilts or something?? just cant get past that look
