is there anyway to test for a leak before installation of the cover?? I've not installed mine yet and would rather not have to find there is a leak after the install.

What I did is I turned it over and filled it with used motor oil. It was thin enough that I would think it would go through any holes. It did I gave it to my cousin's friend and got most of the 6 leaks I found. But the above pic is a few weeks after I installed it. Go figure

Ok, I am ready to reinstall my Rock Lizard diff cover. I used a LubeLocker gasket the first time, but because the bolts were too soft I could not really torq down the cover to the 30 ft/lbs. I've gotten new bolts from Rock Lizard (thanks) and I've gotten the cover off. The question is whether I should reuse the gasket and also use RTV. I did not see any lube running down the face of the cover so I think that the leak is from the seal. If I use RTV, should I install the cover and wait 20-30 to do the final torq, as I remember reading in another post or just torq to the final settings? Also, do I need to wait the full 24 hrs to let the RTV cure to refill or is it alright to refill after 1-2 hrs?
Thanks for your opinion!

I didn't read the curing time for the RTV Gasket and torqued it down all the way. Too late to do over since I had already filled it and I was not about to drain and do it again. I have had no leaks. I would recommend following the directions though.

If you are in a hurry get "The Right Stuff" from permatex in the cheese can. Even if you arent in a hurry I would recommend it. The lubelocker isnt "officially" reusable but often times you can do so several times.

Also make sure your cover is flat....set it down on a flat surface and check around the edges with a feeler gauge In my opinion it should be flat to within .010-.015 but you could probably get away with more. A pane of glass is usually fairly flat if it is not really old and and a piece of paper is about .003 if you have to improvise.
