About 3. Couldn't resists.

The 4 ways are the wide flat one. I rented a u-haul dolly once and it had the 4 way adapter. It's the older style and the four loose wire just plug into the little grips on the 4 way plug.

My trailer is new and uses the 7 way which is the round plug with 7 prongs. New stuff = more electric stuff = 7 way.

4 work with wire and the 7 work with plugs. That's my take on it. My 7 way came with a 4 way adapter so I could connect with either. (so of course I forgot it when I rented the u-haul and had to buy another....)

I've rambled. Hope that helped.

4 wire is for the ground, turn signals and brake lights. 7 wire is for heavier trailers with electric brakes. if you are towing only a small utility trailer, don't worry about electric brakes on the trailer.

Yes sort of. If you rent a triler with a 7 pin and u have a 4 pin, then any lowes, home depot autozone nappa... will have the converter.

there are also converters for the other direction.

Word of caution. IF the trailer has a 7 pin and you use the converter, make sure the electric brakes work and that you are not OVER pulling for your KJ.

Thanks for clarifying that.

How big/what kind of a trailer would have electric brakes?

KJ with just a hitch and no coolers can pull 2,000 lbs max.

KJ with coolers (Oil, Tranny, Power Streering) can pull 5,000 lbs max.

Something with alot of weight. Trailer brakes keep all that weight from coming around on you when you stop and not putting all that force on just the hitch and ball.
