I really like that low profile rack. However, I have a lot of Yakima accessories on my XJ. I'm looking to get some cross bars for the KJ too. That low profile rack would be perfect. Any chance those cross bars on the low profile rack are the same size as Yakima round cross bars? That would be awesome if the Yakima accessories would fit that rack.

Also...do these use the factory mounting points for the factory bars? Sorry, my bars are under the Renegade plastic, so I'm not sure how they attach. Drilling required?

Bolts directly to stock locations, so no drilling require. Just line up the holes and bolt them down. The outer rails are 1.5" OD, and the cross bars are 1.25" OD, so you would need to measure the Yakima stuff to see if the mounts would work. There are so many aftermarket roof rack accessories out there that I just wouldn't be able to research it all, so the customer would need to provide the specs and I could determine if it would work or not.

Marty,

As I posted earlier, I mentioned Yakima and Thule. These two companies are your most common and respected. It would be great if you focused on them.

To me. rack is awesome, but I am focused on increasing KJ off-road capability right now. My rails and rack function just fine for now.

In this order:
Front bumper
"Someone's" lockers
Adding "Super" to my current Skinks
4.10's
New tires (by the time I get to this position in the order, my tires will be bald)

BUT...........if you find the need for a guinea pig for testing new products, I'm all for it.

Anyone else want roof rails that cover the roof area front to back?

I must be the only one... :?

I'd like to see what you are talking about, bugnout,

I was wondering, Marty, about the roof rails and where you turn the tubes down only partialy and the more abruptly (red arrows)

Is it concievable to extend the straight portion further to allow for a larger deck on the sport rack? I love the way it contoure the roof line, but a couple more cross bars for the deck might be nice too.

Image

Oh and would there be a way to ad a couple of light tabs on the back?

While I have you, On the Sport Rack, Is it possible to predrill the side rails where the front and rear cross bars are welded so the weld and cross bar covers the hole and to drill the cross bars where the light tabs are, so that wires can be fished through the rack and thus gommett and conceal the wires for any lights making it cleaner.

Image

Thanks

OK, real quick answers for some of those questions. The main rail design is already set. One off tube bending isn't cheap which is why I order the same design in larger quantities. The new rail design on the Green KJ is just a slight bit different from the original on Ted's jeep, so I can spread the crossbars out a little more forward and back, because the main bars are 1/2" taller than Ted's, mainly to give more room for install the inboard rear mounting bolts. The front and rear bars on Ted's sport rack are about 3/16" from his roof, which is real close when the roof gets warm. When you cut, knotch, fit and weld as much tube as I'm looking at doing, drilling eleventy billion holes in each rack isn't my idea of fun. If you want holes, drill bits are cheaper than my labor rate. Bugnout, the biggest problem with rails all the way to the front is the big bubble head of a jeep the KJ is. If the rails continue straight forward, there would be a huge funny gap between the rail and the roof. To follow the roof line, several extra bends would be needed, and as already stated, one off tube bending $$$. If I had access to a tube roller it would be easier, but I would need to buy one of those someday ($$$$$$$). So, for now, the main rails will stay in their current design. The basket rack I plan to have a hoop come out from the front bar of the rack to extend more toward the front, but that will make more sense when you see it.

Shipping the HD rails will be fairly cheap and easy. The racks will be fun. The basket rack will have to be collapsible, or shipped by freight. The sport racks if shipped fully welded, just barely squeeze below the max requiments for UPS ground, but they are still an oversize package. Figured shipping yesterday to the east coast (NewYork) for $117. If the rack were shipped so the crossbars could be bolted to the rails, it would cut shipping in half, but the cost of the rack would go up a little due to the extra time and labor to make it collapsible.

Prices:

HD rails with hardware and sandblasted: Regular Retail $270, Sale price for this batch $230. Black Hammered Paint add $15.

Sport Rack with hardware, welded: Reg Retail $475, Sale price for this batch $425. Sandblasting add $25. Painting not available for welded rack.

Sport Rack with hardware, bolt together: Reg Retail $525, Sale price for this batch $475. Sandblasting add $25. Black Hammered Paint add $20.

Basket Rack: no pricing at this time.

I'm putting the tube order in Monday, Sept 3rd. This tube order will consist of the material for me to make the prototype basket rack, and the tubing for all the preorders I receive up to the 3rd. My tube guy will take a few weeks to get them done, so if you can't preorder by the 3rd, you will still have a week or two to get the order in before he actually starts on my order. If you can't do the full amount up front but want in on the first batch, just make a non refundable deposit of $100 on the HD rails or $200 for the Sport rack.

marty I understand about the holes. Just my dream world. never hurts to ask.

Question: I promise this is the last (not really) How is the vehicle's ground on the sport rack, is it conected well for a single hot wire for the lights and CB antenna?

Question: and this is my last (yeah right) The cross bars of the Sport Rack, is it possible to space them so that the factory spare tire hanger from the back can be drilled and tapped for new bolts so When i get a RL rear bumper I can move my spare up top and the mounting holes on the factory holder will line up with the center line of at least two cross bars so I can drill and tap those two bars for the tire mount. Did that make any scense?

200.00 deposit on welded sports rack. how do you want it?

Well I like the rails Marty made, but I want to be able to put a cross bar all the way forward (no sunroof) I'm looking for something similiar to the liberator basket, but just rails that extend the full length of the roof. I know that there are no mounting points up there, but using the existin 2 points with a second leg, and the front point just resting on the rubber would do the trick

kjhawaii made full front to rear rack. I am working on something similar but made of unistrut.

Here is a link

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/vie ... ght=lumber

Might want to take any further discussion there or in a new thread. This one is jumbled up enough as it is

Might be a good idea to make a new thread for the pre-orders on this rack too.

Bugnout: Understood, and I have though about doing something like that, but the biggest issue is you need a tube roller, not a bender, to roll the rail to follow the contour of the roof. If you take a tube and just put two 60* or whatever bends at the ends, I guarantee it still won't look anything close to that rack. Lay a 2x4 or something flat on the roof and you will see how big of a gap each end will have, especially if you raise the rails by 2-3" so the lowest point isn't sitting on the roof. If business keeps up, somday soon I'll purchase a tube roller and make all kinds of neat stuff, but until then, it'll just be a waiting game. :(

Thanks Marty,

I guess I'm going to have to order some more stuff so you can buy that bender sooner :D
