If I use the Mobile 1 Extended Performance filter do I have to put extra oil in the jeep?
Just wondering because I have no clue what I'm doing and the filter says
'high capacity" design.

Also which type of wrench would be best to get the filter off?
I have an '07 and it looks like I'll be accessing the filter from the top.
I've never done this before.

Johnny,

is this you first oil change?

If so be prepared to wrestle with the filter a little. The first ones can be pretty tight.

If not, then most times if the engine is warm the filter will be easily removed with a strap wrench. If you can get a "Socket" that fits the end of the new filter they work great. Just don't over tighten it when you put on the new one, just a quarter turn after it is hand tight.

Is the filter phyisically bigger than the old one? If it is not and is the same size then there should be no more oil capacity increase.

If this is your first time on this '07, you might consider having the stealership change it with oem recomended oil this time just incase the filter is on there way tight. I have seen posts where people have had major issues with removing the filter for the first time.

good luck.

Just put the normal amount (5 qts) in and check the dipstick when complete. I put a larger filter on my Libby (Wix 51515 for a small block Ford) and didn't add any more than 5 qts. Alway check the dipstick when done in case you forgot to put the plug back in (like I did once) or didn't get the filter tight.

I've had the first couple oil changes done by the dealership, but
this will be the first time I have ever tried changing oil myself on any vehicle.

I bought some wrench that looks like a giant pair of pliers. Not sure if that'll work.
I think I'll take it back and get a strap wrench...........whatever that is.

If you need a picture of a strap wrench, I can take a photo of the few I have when I get home from work. Basically, it's just a metal band with a rubber handle. You slip it over the filter case, apply some pressure to tighten the band and pull counterclockwise to spin the filter off.

There will be a little oil seepage from the filter so have a rag or something handy.

Use some fresh oil on the gasket (for the new filter) and lube the gasket surface. If you don't lube the gasket, the filter will get stuck on the block and all kinds of fun will ensue for the next oil change.

5 Quarts is all you need with the Mobil 1 filter

Thanks for the info.

Do I want the strap wrench with the metal band and the pivoting handle, or
do I want the strap wrench that actually has some kind of fabric-looking strap?

I saw both kinds at the auto store.

Metal band w/ Pivoting handle... There should be two sizes of bands so get the smaller one.

Just get a cup wrench and put a ratchet on it. If you dont know what kind to get, go to advance and get the filter and see which cup wrench fits it.

You never said if this was the Jeeps first fluid change. If it is, make sure the cup wrench fits the stock filter. The stock filter may also be REALLY tight. If it is, then cup wrench may spin on the filter. If it does this, drill a hole in the side of the cup wrench and put a big nail through the hole and into the filter. It will make a heck of a mess since oil will go everywhere, but it was all I could think of at the time.

Another helpful note, try to get the filter off before draining the oil if this is the Jeeps first oil change. That way if you cant get the filter off then you can still drive it without having to put new oil in it.

It's about the 3rd oil change. Yeah, I was planning on loosening the filter a little before I did the rest just to make sure I can get it off.

Guess I won't have to worry about an oil filter wrench.
I just tried turning it by hand and it was pretty easy; I thought it would be stuck on real tight from the dealership, but I guess I was wrong.
I tightened it back on because I am going to go a few hundred more miles before changing it.

I live in an apartment. To keep from spilling oil could I loosen the filter and then slip a freezer bag under it it to catch it after I finish loosening it?

Also is it easy to keep from spilling it out of the drain plug?
My landlord would probably gett pretty pissed if I spilled it on the parking lot since their lease says no auto repairs on the premises.

Jeepster,

Thanks for teaching me something new.

"drill a hole in the side of the cup wrench and put a big nail through the hole and into the filter"

Thats a good one.

I too use a wix (napa gold), but in the standard size. I would love to go oversize, but to me it does not seem possible. It takes up all the room there is once it is completely unscrewed. Of course I am assuming that the oversized filter is longer. Perhaps it is just fatter? Was it fairly easy to fit?
Thanks!

:)

I had a REALLY stuck oil filter once unfortunately having not planed ahead couldn't get it off after having already drained the oil. As I was using Amsoil too costly to waste I resorted to driving a long heavy duty screw driver thru the center to penetrate the core and all. It was a big big mess but finally came off, tearing half the filter buy at least an inch it was really stuck. But I finaly won, would not want to go thru that again.
Moral to the story plan way ahead :(

I like to put fresh oil into the new filter before installing in order to help minimize the time that the engine is running "dry." You cannot fill it totally to the top, as the filter goes on slightly tilted...3/4 full is about right...good luck!

If you want to go the whole 9 yard here are a couple of Amsoil product of interst:

AMS-Oiler, Oil precharger : http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/amk.aspx
or
AMSOIL By-Pass OIL Filter system : http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/bf.aspx

Either one will take you up to the next step in having clean oil but it insures your synthetic oil can do it's job better in protecting you engine

Yeah, what he said. I will be installing a bypass/remote filter on my SFA KJ in the near future and will post a tech article on it. Hopefully I can find the room underhood for a clean install.
