I have been changing my oil filter every 5K and my oil every 10K...

I was wondering, if a filter does as good or better job of filtering the more it is used why am I changing it every 5K?

Is there a risk of clogging the filter? Are oil filters different than other filters and work better when new?

Someone steer me straight.

I guess this is true to some extent. As the fliter traps particles, these
particles trap more particles, which trap more and so on. But, eventually
so many particles will get trapped that oil flow through the filter will be
severely restricted. The life of an oil filter is dependant on the volume of
oil you are filtering and the amount of particles the oil contains. The only
way to know how good a job your filter is doing is cutting open the
canister and inspecting the filter element.

When is comes to filters I follow Biggs Law... Bigger is Better!

I haven't found yet if there is a bigger filter that will fit in place of our little
one.

I noticed the mobil 1 unit was longer than the fram, I suppose thats both good and bad.

I run a larger filter. It is the Napa gold 1515. It is a little bigger around than the 1516 which is the stock size. I ordered it through http://www.fleetfilter.com/
It is a bit longer and larger in diameter. It still fits well, I will try and snap a couple pix tonight. I don't remember the volume increase but it seems like it was half a quart or so.
Fleet filter has some great deals, their pricing is about 2/3's of the local napa price and they offer a bulk discount. Be great for local group buys.

Are you regularly performing oil analysis? I'd think that would give you objective results.

Personally, I would not run oil to 10k (especially in this vehicle) without an oil analysis.

Not running oil analysis...I probably should but from what I have seen, after this engine is broken in (im at 45K now) and running the ORM, I think it will be at least OK. I use rotella T and napa gold filters.

About the larger filter..

Someone found a larger Amsoil filter that fits, maybe the will chime in?

The lab that I used for an oil analysis also will test filters. They cut the filter open then wash the filter media in a special solution to extract the stuff it caught. Finally they analyze what it was and how much of it there was in the filter.

Yes there is a posting on hear about another Amsoil filter that was longer. One or two here were using it.

Speak of the devil and he'll answer.

That was me, Amsoil EaO-26. Wix equivalent 51773. Also found a Fleetguard Stratapore glass media that should work, same diameter as the Amsoil and Wix, but about an inch shorter (stock 5" L, Fleetguard 6" L, Amsoil -26 / Wix 51773 7" L), LF3487. Napa Gold should have a version of the Wix 51773 (that's who makes them for Napa), perhaps 1773 for P/N?

Just to keep it straight - Huge size (7" L, Large diameter) - Amsoil EaO-26, which crosses to Wix 51773. Wix 51773 also crosses to Purolator L40017.

Medium size (6" L, Large diameter) - Fleetguard Stratapore LF3487, regular versions LF3313/LF551A. LF3313 also crosses over to Purolator L30001.

A little hint on trying to find different size oil filters for the same vehicle - for each standard thread size, there's a standard gasket size. If it's the right thread size to screw on, it's about a 99% bet it'll have the right size gasket as well. Our thread is 3/4 - 16. Only thing you have to check is if you have enough room to fit the larger case size under the hood.

This past weekend I cut the housings from a WIX 51516XP and LF3487. I measured the volume of each. The 51516XP holds 15 oz. The LF3487 holds 27 oz (12 additional oz). Assuming 6.4L is the correct fill volume for an oil change with a stock sized filter change, using the Fleetguard LF3487will increase oil capacity to 6.775L

I believe the Wix 51516 is the standard filter for our Jeeps, and the Wix 51515 is actually the oversized variant of said same.

Most of us already use the Napa Gold 1515 (made by wix anyways) which increases the oil capacity to 7.0L even.

Nice to know there's another variant out there, but I don't have anything that measures .775L

7.0 is so much easier!

Hope this helps!

WIX filters-oil 51515 (7 qts oil for full fill) vs 51516 (stock 6.3 or 6.4 qts oil for full fill); NAPA Gold PNs just use the last 4 digits; Mann makes a good filter (idparts has) that's available in the US and overseas but I don't know standard vs oversize PNs; there is also a good Mobil filter but I don't have PNs handy.

Many/most don't like Fram. I have no opinion as I've been using WIX for decades.

I've been using the Fram Ultra XG8A which is the equivalent to the Wix 51515/Napa 1515. They are all meant for the Ford Windsor motors. Its a synthetic filter and users over a BITOG have very good things to say about it. I have an AMSOIL bypass unit that I need to install but I'm still trying to figure out where to mount the thing. With that in place I will used the Fram XG8A as the primary "full-flow" filter and then the AMSOIL by-pass filter to handle to super fine stuff. This will save me a little money but also give me excellent filtration.

I cross referenced the WIX 51515XP on the Cummins Filtration website. It crosses to the Fleetguard LF3487. I checked the specs on the 51515XP and the LF lar3487 is actually larger.

http://www.wixfilters.com/Lookup/PartDe ... rt=51515XP

http://catalog.cumminsfiltration.com/ca ... partflag=0

As I stated above, I measured the volume difference between the 51516XP and the LF3487 is only 12 oz larger; not enough to increase the oil fill volume to 7 quarts.

Meh, you'll burn the .225L off through the turbo anyways. :-)r
