Hub bearings? I was just thinking that it sounded like rusted ball bearings...
So when I am at the tire place, what should I tell them to check? Why would the hub bearings go bad only after 40k? Do they get rusted by driving through messy water?
The unit bearing are KJ's use can go at anytime, some have gone in 20,000 miles others last over 150,000 miles,so they can go at anytime. And yes muddy water, salt slush, and other contaminated liqiuds can make them go out faster. You can check them your self, jack up one front tire, grab the top and bottom of the tire and try to move it,any movement you have bad bearings, also spin the tire and listen for strange sounds.Just because they are still tight does not mean they are good, they still maybe tight but the seals are gone and all the grease is gone and they just have not worn enough to have play in them but will make noises.
