Is there something wrong with the private messages? I have notifications in my email of receiving PMs but there are no PMs in my box.

When the PM is sent, an e-mail notification is sent to you. If the PM is deleted before you read it, the e-mail can not be retracted. Thus when you click on the e-mail, the PM is gone. A PM can be edited or deleted by the sender, as long as the receiver hasn't read it yet.
