I don't understand. Unless i'm really missing something, you think ATs will have better traction on ice than MTs? No matter what treads you got, unless it's studded or chained, you're gonna have no traction.

Beep Beep,it's got something to do with siping on the treads,MT's usually have none or very little.Studs and chains are the best, but AT's do offer better traction on ice.

Oh, I did not realize that. Thank you for that information. Are there any MTs that have this "siping"?

Yep,Interco Trxus MT's have the most sipping of any MT tire,in a few weeks I'll tell you how they handle th ice. Then again I have never had a problem on the Ice with MT type tires,I got 4wd,and lockers  .

Oh and some tire shops(discount tires I know forsure) will sip your tires for you for about $40-$50 a tire.

I'd also say that the Interco's probably have the most siping. And like tjkj2002 said, you could have someone cut up the tread a little more if you need to.The same place might offer studding, and might be a good idea if you could get some AT's later to put on in the spring. Our state allows you to run studs from Nov. to March I think, and for hardpack and ice, they are the "Cats stupid".

Or just run the studs till spring and then pop them out, takes a while but I have done it before  With a good set of studded tires and 4 WD you think you can go anywhere! and almost can!

Mickey Thompson MTZ are mudders and are siped, I absolutely love my set and wont be buyin anythin else ever again unless somethin dramatically better comes out...so are the Toyo OC mudders and the Cooper STTs, all siped mudders. Basically everythin thats needs to be said was said. ATs will be downright dangerous in any sorta of wet/muddy trail conditions. You wont get a lick of traction and will constantly be sliding on the trail, sometimes into trees, rocks, walls, whatever thats out there. Trust me from personal experience wheelin with a guy who thought his ATs did ok in the mud until we got caught in a sudden downpour...his TJ was so bashed up by the end it was unreal, my TJ, not a bit of damage. Just my $.02, but there are siped mudders that do great in the wet, snow, ice road conditions 8)

I like the AT
(1) Quiter on the road
(2) less were
(3) dont do enought Mud to need STT

I had Cooper STT and now go with Cooper ATR and have had verry good luck with them.
My liberty is heaver than my Unlimited and can do about as good as the LJ with cooper stt. I do mostley rocks and rivers and stay out of mud as much as possible. unless I do any ruffer stuff and quit driving them as a DD , AT's are better for me.

I have over 15k on my MTZs and they have little wear in the tread...rotated every 5k and they are champs for on and off road my $.02 cents...and I sure as hell aint wheelin my rig on fire roads if ya catch my drift, it gets a workout yet the tires are still holdin up great...try these on for size...

That aint me in the pic btw  Good lilttle buddy of mine...in the above pic and the below pic

If yall can fit an MTZ under a KJ I would highly recommend doing so...like I said BEST tire Ive ever owned on my jeeps. Excellent in all conditions, mud, snow, rain, rocks, slickrock, dirt, soft sand, etc. and great on road manners too  [/img]

Not meaning to cause problems but they are with in a 200-300# if not less
my TJ is 4200# the KJ is 4400#
fuel and cargo will make a diff. but to me those are real world numbers

befor ANYONE trys to argue
I work on Industrial Scales and weighing systems ,Truck Scales on the highway, so I have weighed both of them in the real world
and did it on 4 scales weighing each wheel
wanted to get the TJ as balanced as I could

Now on topic
buy tires that suit YOUR NEEDS
if you are like the KJ owners around me ,buy what ever cheep highway tires you can get cause you never go off road any way
if you are some one who likes to lie to them self and claim to wheel ,like most of the TJ owners around me then get some el-cheepo
MT's or AT's it wont matter either way they are just for looks
If you are like me or rather my wife and do go out now and then get some GOOD AT's ,BFG would be my top pick
if you are like me and not my wife and are a cheep sensored word scout the local 4X4 shops and look for some
MTR's that were pulled from a rubi. with only a few K miles on them and buy them for like $50 a tire
that way who cares if they only last 30K
or that they make noise and ride rough
that they dont get the "top rated" wet weather traction
They cost less than 1/2 the price of the cheep tires
look better and hold up great off road

Don't assume everyone is going to argue first off...just giving differing opinions. A stock 3.7L KJ is 4033#/CRD 4200+#...A stock TJ is 3435#/Unlimited 3721#. That is the starting point...from there you add what you add with mods. It really is not something that anyone here can change...nor can we change the fact that a TJ can wear bigger meats than a KJ in stock form.

As for tires/wheels, the best possible scenario is to be able to have two sets...one for the road and one for the trails but that is a bit of a PITA for most of us. IMO unless you are always doing serious roakkrawling/mudding ect., an AT is probably the best compromise.

I under stand what is "printed" but that is not the real world
that is dry empty curb weight
the weight of the TJ is 6 ,auto ,hard top and full doors
sure a 4 all soft will be less but the Unlimited TJ has more steel than the standard and comes 6
just off the top of me head

I said that because it seems that most of the folks around here think of the KJ as the "pig" of the jep world wich is not so
they are in line with any thing else when you look at it

The Maxxis Buckshot Mudders have sipped center blocks and are ready for studs. I really suggest you check them out, they are an awesome tire. Computer designed for noise reduction, factory balanced and trued, strong side walls, excellent traction in just about anything, clean out very well, very strong side walls, long lasting for a mud tire. The only complaint I've ever heard about them is that they may chip on sharp rocks, but that is a compromise of having sipping.

( What would you run AT or MT? Just looking for peoples opinions. )

( I do mostly rocks and rivers and stay out of mud as much as possible. unless I do any ruff-er stuff and quit driving them as a DD , AT's are better for me. )

I thought the first post was about a Liberty . not some yellow bird on trails. I do trails also and don't need to prove it . I was showing what I like to do . A KJ is not a Unlimited and LIKE I SAID for what I do I like ATR on the Liberty and STT on the Unlimited. but if you know what is better for you great. But like every one, opinions can be like booty !!!!! anybody can be one.

I had the Maxxis Buckshot Mudders on my 2002 KJ...245/75/16s then 265/75/16s and loved them. I now have Hercules Terra Trac AT 235/75/16s on my stock 2006 CRD and love them too. I will say that even if ATs work for you, there is nothing like a good set of MTs. They seem to be better in every situation offroad...just the nature of the tire. Price wise I couldn't find anything better than the Maxxis...8 or 10 ply sidewall.

From the guy who tests tires for several companies:

Unless you run it on the mud non stop, or rock crawl pretty much non stop, get a 3 Ply AT tire. AT's test out as good or better than an MT on everything but DEEP mud. MT's grab rocks better for crawling and throw more goo out of the tread than an AT because of lug spacing, but that's about it. The eat your gas mileage from rolling resistance and they don't last half as long for the same reason.

Getting a 3 ply tire allows you to air them down without worrying too much about throwing a bead or having the sidewalls get sliced in the sharp rocks. The KJ is a heavy sucker... I ate up a set of BFG muds in 25K running 245's with regular rotations. Put some AT's on, 50K. And I live up here in mud central... they did fine on all but the slickest roots and mud. I run MT's now because the price was right and I take it into the heavy rocks quite a bit more now. Best MT tires I've ever tried where the BFG for grab because they're so soft (although the new ones will rival the MTR... but they don't make em small enough yet), Toyo's for wear and noise but they don't clear mud too well because they're a harder compound tire and the Goodyear MTR was probably the best tire all around for wear, noise and traction.

Firestone makes a nice AT, the Yokohama is a kick booty AT but they're hard to find. The Pro Comp Extreme AT is a great tire but heavy.... BFG's have a nice price point for the wear and quality.

Hope that helps.... here's what I'm running now:
(Yeah, my fat stupid'ed girl is eating them up...especially with all the extra steel underneath these days, but hey, the price is right!)

I always thought some siped slicks would be awsome at Moab on a stretched ZUK...grip for days.

Road 7 days at Moab on a mountain bike on Moab Slicks...470 miles...they gripped so hard the front wheel could lift on a climb and would still head up if you had the legs for it.

Has anyone run FireStone Destination AT's. I like the look and the listed performance (tirerack). I am not lifted but want to run the largest possible that are unlikely to rub on- or off-road and 235/75r 16 sems like the right size.
