Hi-- I am ordering a set of cragar 397 soft 8's and am wondering if the tire pressure monitering system on my 05 Sport will work with these. I have the basic idiot light system.

Has anyone tried it?

The guys who mounted and balanced my soft 8's told me that the tpms might not hold a seal and that he would charge some 10 bucks per valve to install on the new rims... I just told him to use regular valves so I wouldnt have to pay an extra $50. They mightve just been talking out of their arse, but I have always had issues with the TPM system anyways so it didnt really bother me that much. Now i just have a little orange light on in the dash and my evic reminds me I have a low spare pressure every time I turn on the car.

Thanks for the reply. Is there any annoying chime other than when you first start up?

I'm also worried about passing inspection, but I guess I can hold onto the old tires and rims and throw 'em on once a year.

I'm pretty sure the TPM valves will work on any set of rims, but yes (I think) there is a chime when I turn on the car, but it only chimes once. Or I've already gotten used to it and dont notice it anymore. As far as inspection goes Im clueless. Aftermarket rims shouldnt be that big of a deal.... It is a jeep afterall. Next time I take the jeep in i'll try and get them to disable the tpm system. You might want to keep the stock stuff around for resale if you plan on it in the future.

If anyone is following this I had them mounted on my 05 Sport today. The tire guy said that the TPMS was not in the tire or wheel and must be part of the hub. I didn't believe him, but they are mounted and no light or chime went off so he must be right. They look sweet too!

The risk you run is not the TPMS stem not sealing to the wheel...that's no problem. the risk you run is that it'll stick out too far and get broken when the tire is being installed.

If yours has the idiot light, and no aluminum valve stems, it's an indirect system, that uses the tone rings on the hubs/axles to detect differences in wheel speed. not as accurate as direct TPMS, which has the sensors in the wheels.

Your tire guy is poorly educated and I'd start going to a new tire shop if he has no clue which vehicles have what sort of TPMS system...because chances are, if he doesn't know and hasn't been taught, nobody taht works there does. Good luck going there with an 07-08 Tahoe, Yukon, or Escalade. You'd be boned.

I've heard that they won't work in steel wheels because they impede the signals or somesuch. Any truth to that?

I'm not sure about the engineering (not my strong point), but the Cragar 397's are on and there is no dash light or chime, which is all that matters to me. I don't care if its working or not.

Sorry for the late reply, but no. Lots of factory systems use the wheel-mounted sensor on a steel wheel. for '08, ALL vehicles have to have a direct TPMS system, and that includes the base model steel-wheel Kia Rios up to the most expensive Maybach, Rolls, and Bentley...so there's gonna have to be a sensor in there somewhere:)

With the 04 style sensors in steel wheels, would you still be able to train them with a magnet without removing the tire?

From what i've read, the answer is no, but i don't have any first hand experience.

This process can be done by the dealer with a DRB-III tool. The ID's of each sensor must be written down and assigned a location (LF, RF, RR, LR, SP). They are then rewritten to tell the EVIC which position each sensor is in."

Since they used the same sensors in the 02-04 gc as they did in the '04 KJ (part numbers are in a table in the middle of the web page), i assume the above is true for the KJ also.

I don't know about a magnet, but if you use the tool to train the sensors (on GM vehicles, never had to train 'em on a Chrysler) you point the tool at the base of the valvestem/sensor "through" the tire, not through the wheel.

Also, I was fairly sure that all Chrysler's direct TPMS vehicles were self learning, with a receiver in each fenderwell.

In some later models there was a pickup in each wheel well. To train mine I put it in training mode on the EVIC, then hold a powerful magnet at each valve stem in order.

They work fine at least the premium system. I have the secret.

can you add the wheel sensor into stock steel wheels and how much would they cost + installation? I just moved my 17" from my 05 Limited to my wifes Sport and BING my sensor went off. I had no idea I even had this on my Jeep. Is this a standard feature on Limiteds? I may just end up swapping the wheels back if this is too much of a cost factor.

I may find out sometime this week to satiate my own lust for electronic goodies

the ones for my kk were 40 bucks from the stealership...with out the install kit...when i was looking, discount tire quoted me 55 per wheel which was every thin
