Thanks for the API link, I should have verified before posting. I would regret an oil failure and not have the approved fluid installed for warranty purposes. Don

Baldwin, Hastings and Amsoil are all the same oil filters. Heavy Duty construction and they filter to 3 micro nominal. The Amsoil name on them costs you a little extra last I looked. The filtration level that the high end synthetic filters the others now build filter to, is where these guys have been for 30 years or better.

I did a survey in trying to find the best overall oil to use in my CRD. After some research and asking the right questions, I decided to use Caltex Delo 400 Multigrade.

Delo 400 is the first world oil to meet the Global DHD-1 specification, provides unsurpassed protection in all equipment including Japanese, European of North American makes whether they are old or new. It also meets CI-4 Plus and a host of other standards. Specifically designed for the latest electronically controlled diesel engines experiencing high soot loading, Delo 400 is formulated with unique ISOSYN™ technology, a combination of special base oils and advanced additive technology, to provide exceptional soot dispersancy, deposit control and wear protection.

Hope this info is of use - although I believe this oil may not be available in the USA

Caltex Delo 400 Spec sheet listed at:

But is it synthetic? It says it uses "ISO SYN" but doesn't actually say it's a synthetic oil?

The manual for the 2006 no longer specifies Mobil one brand. Just that it is CF/SF compliant 0-40 or 5-50.

The manual says to use 0w-40 Mobil One and that 5w-40 Mobil One is acceptable. I'm no expert on warranties but if they wanted to push the issue on an engine warranty couldn't they test the oil and claim abuse by not using the proper oil? The manual does give a specific brand and weight, just a thought.

Sounds like they're getting there. Now they just need to add the CI-4 diesel rating.

How about these oils:

http://www.fuchs-oil.com/1542.html

None of them show CL-4 but many of them do meet VW specs for TDI engines, and some MB specs as well.

Do any of those specs translate to CRD compatible oil?

(What does the new 06 manual say *exactly* about oil, since it no longer mentions Mobil 1. Does it give any MB or Mopar specs in addition to the CF/CH/CL)?

Just curious, not trying to start a fight....

:)

edit: These http://www.fuchs-oil.com/1544.html have one (the Titan HPE) that has CH-4 and DHD-1, but is only on the 15w40. Bummer....

FWIW I'm a new CRD owner coming up on my 25k maintenance window. Looking around at the oils available etc. Was reading up on the Amsoil webiste and ran across the following:

AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Premium Diesel Oil (DEO)
AMSOIL Synthetic 5W-40 Premium Diesel Oil (DEO) is the premium choice diesel oil for model year 2007 and newer heavy-duty and pickup truck diesel engines requiring API CJ-4 emission quality oil standards.

API CJ-4 is a higher standard than either CI-4 or CI-4+, I'm not sure about all the other brands etc, but I'll give this oil a go for the first oil change that I'll be performing on my vehicle.

Not really a higher standard, just a different standard. Some say that it sacrifices lubrication qualities and TBN by reducing the ingredients that poison the 2007+ diesel particulate filters. Others say that's nonsense and those ingredients have been compensated for. Since our CRDs don't have DPFs, I'm sticking with CI-4+ rated oils.

Rotella 5w40 full synthetic
Valvoline Premium Blue 5w40 full synthetic (designed for Cummins diesels and bearing the Cummins logo)
Mobil 1 5w40 diesel full synthetic

Are all commonly available for under $22 a gallon. The Rotella can be had as low as $17 a gallon, and is one of the better performing oils (based on sampling) in pre-PD Volkswagen and pre-2007 Mercedes diesels. Anything beyond those three seems a waste of money to me.

I use the Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40. It Meets CJ-4, CI-4, and CH-4. It's fully synthetic and is widely available. The specs are good, the price is right and I can buy it at Wally World in a 1 gal. jug for $22. Just my 2 cents.

My father in law is an auto mechanic and has been an avid fan of Amsoil for more than 30 years. I was just talking to him about a month ago and he says that he really likes Royal Purple and it's easier to get your hands on. His cars routinely go for over 250k miles and they are all gassers. Food for thought I guess. . .

Some wally worlds have it and some don't and the same with Rotella 5-40  Most cars that are kept up if they don't rust in two first can do 250k miles :D

I've been running the Mobile 1 0w40 in the Winter and running Shell ROTELLA T Synthetic 5W-40 in warmer months. We're considering a move to Texas, and I'll go to Shell ROTELLA T Synthetic 5W-40 full time then.

I just recently switched to rotella synthentic 5-40 when i started havin trouble with oil in the hoses to the point it was blowing the intake hose off the throttle body. brought it to the dealer and they cleaned out the intercooler, put on a new throttle body, new air filter, changed oil to rotella, cleaned EGR (found out it was new), replaced the wastegate and the CCV. so far after driven it for a lil over 1000 miles since the fix have lil oil in hoses and runnin great.

Is anyone really that anal about 0w40 or 5w40 to worry that one has pour point of -54F while the other has a pour point of -45F? The number in the front is the winter flow rating. They are both 40 weights. Now if anyone here is sitting in -60F during the winter and not using a block heater or oil pan heater, then there may be a problem. Heck, we used 15w40 diesel oils in Alaska for years with no problems.

A lot of the times, the manufacturers recommend the lowest winter flow rating to substantiate better mpg's. Some truth to that, but am not going to lose sleep that I am using a 5w40 over a 0w40 in my CRD because I use neither... I use 10w40 Amsoil AMO. Got a lot of equipment that uses a similar grade so the CRD gets the same stuff and has never complained. Also, it has a TBN >12 compared to the newer CJ-4 oils which have lower TBN numbers. The Amsoil AMO 10w40 is a CI-4+ oil, so it is a valid oil to use in the CRD and it flows at a respectable -43F. A temp a lot lower than we ever see in the upper midwest.

Most of all.... just use whatever you like. Mobil 1, Royal Purple, Amsoil, Rotella, Castrol, etc. They are all very good oils and unless you are going for the maximum extended drains and doing UOA's religiously, it really doesn't matter which you use. For those of you doing standard 6K-10K drains, go with whatever brand synthetic you feel comfortable with and can get at the best price. The differences between these oils is so miniscule that it doesn't affect the average owner.
