Ok, I have read a few posts on tires and I think I have my answer but I want to make sure I understand as I am new to 4x4's and tires for some off-roading.

My '04 Sport has the stock steel rims (I wanted the Alloys but the wife ruined the deal at the dealership). Anyways, I know I could probably get the answer from a tire service center but I don't want to look like a tard when I go get the tires. Right now I have the extremely crappy 215/75/R16 Wranglers on there that are pretty much bald and in need of replacement. I am only interested in mild off-roading with no mods. I want something that would be good if I went through alittle mud, snow, and good traction on wet pavement. Road noise is also a concern.

My question is what size tire can I fit on these rims? I know (from reading somebodies post) that a 225/75/R16 will work on that rim. Correct? This may be obvious to others I just don't know what will work. The answer I am looking for is "this rim will fit a tire up to a 235 or whatever and only a 75 and a R16." Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Which brings me to my next questions. What tire? What brand? How much? What's good what's bad? I am probably looking at spending anywhere from as cheap as possible, while not sacrificing quality and tread life, to $150 a tire. I have only mildly shopped for tires for my Jeep. If I find some tires online will a local tire center install the new ones for me? Obviously for a price. Some places are really picky about that if you didn't buy from them. If so, what would a good estimate be for just mounting and balancing a tire bought from somebody else? I don't want to get ripped off and have them tell me something outrageous and think that is what it really costs.

I believe that is enough questions to start. Again, thank you ahead of time for the help. I am already learning more about my Jeep everyday I visit the forums.

Welcome to LOST! i hope you find all the answers you are looking for here. There are certainly a lot of knowledgable people on here.

Sounds like you are looking for an AT tire. There are a lot of different ones out there. Alot of people like the Bridgestone? Dueler AT Revos. I dont know too much about these, but people love them. General Grabber AT2 is another fav. As is the BFG All-Terrain TA, although these are kind of expensive. I used to have some Dayton Timberline ATs on my Jeep. I liked these tires a lot. They had a nice all-terrain tread pattern, rode nice, no road noise. I had them off road a couple times and was pleased. They are also pretty cheap. I got them for $100/tire including mount/balance. Keep in mind that no AT tire will do very well in mud or really deep snow. Thats just how it is.

As for size, 235/70r16 was the largest 16" dia size that came stock. This is actually a pretty nice size for a stock height Liberty. I would recommend this size, although people also run 245/70r16 usually without any problems. i dont have personal experience with that size on no lift though.

a 225/75 is a little taller and narrower than the 235/70. If I had to deal with Maryland ice again, I'd go with a narrower tire that might get some traction on the snow covered ice BFG AT/KO's, plus all the others listed are fine tires (but, I've only had wranglers and timberlines myself). poke around in some of these threads and you'll get an idea of what people like...

I ran the 245-70X16 Firestone destination ATs which did a fine job even before I was lifted, so for a little heighth either the 225 75 16 or the 245 70 will both work, as Moose said the 225 a little bit more narrow so more lbs per square inch on the road.

you can also go to a 235/75-16 without rubbing as well. 29.86" diameter...about the tallest without rubbing.

Check out tirerack.com for their survey results to get an idea of what you are looking for. Then do the footwork and find a local dealer (no shipping and they will install) or order em online. I am in the same process right now and almost have it narrowed down. I am getting the 245/70 16 General Grabber AT2 as they seem like the best tire for the price and for what I will use em for.
