CATCRD - I give up, call it what you wish but don't expect the doctor to fix your toothache if you continue to tell him your big toe hurts.

The FUEL STARVATION LAG (how's that Widomaker? ) may be the result of air or blockage but it is a fuel issue and it is dangerous. It does not throw a code so the code monkey mechanics will not easily find it and we will not find a solution by calling it a sore toe. I hope we find a cure

Are you kidding? Limp mode may be caused by air in fuel, but it's not just air if it goes away when you restart the car! Air doesn't go away by itself! Also doesn't make sense that it doesn't happen EVERY time you accelerate hard - or at least most of the time. I think what's happening in some of these cases is that some amount of air ingested because of high fuel demand causes an over active software nanny to kick in and hold the motor back.

OK CATCRD I give up.

I applaud you for taking the time to start this poll and your goals but here is the problem. There is one thing in the Chrysler world (and perhaps the whole modern automotive world) known as "Limp Mode" that the dealer service department understands well. It is triggered by the ECM , TCM or both and throws a CEL. It is triggered to limit damage to the vehicle and allow you to "Limp" in for service.

Somehow on the LOST CRD forum we have taken to calling any performance failure as "limp" so now your poll has data that collects information that may include "Turbo Lag", the industry understood "Limp Mode", perhaps at least one temporary "Traction Control" failure, as well as the very serious condition that you, and others, are calling limp mode. Unless you have actually experienced this mode you might confuse it with any of the others and if you describe it as "Limp Mode" to the dealer they will understand it in totally different terms based on their reality. I don't really wish to get into an arguement about what is causing it nor do I care what you call it but I wish you would choose something other than "Limp Mode" so it can be properly seperated for what it is.

My last post on this topic.

Ok, so I guess you have the inside DCX info that there is one and only one limp mode, and the following testimonials are not it:

Quote:
Happened shortly after setting off on a cold morning, turned the corner just down from my house and as I was accelerating out of the turn, it went into limp mode. I stopped, shut her down and restarted, no problem since. I had seen a post here on L.O.S.T about the limp mode before it occured and was very glad I did. I've never had a vehicle do that before or since.

Quote:
once - just passed someone (he was going 45 in a 60 on a 2 lane road) - and as I slowed down the engine kept slowing - would rev a little - no power - pulled off to the side - checked for a blown Turbo hose (that's what it felt like) - couldn't find any problems - turned it off and back on - no problems,no repeats (and I made some highspeed passes to confirm)

Quote:
ive had it happen to me once, it was around 20k miles, mostly the same song and dance, leaving work, stop at a red light at 505pm, (heavy traffic) light turns green, i step on gas (can i call it that? ) and nothing! ok almost nothing, it was about 5 mph and in the 1 full min it took me to cross i got 28 fingers telling me i was "number one" and about 32 people honking at me.

it was my 2nd full tank of 100% bio so i thought it was a blocked filter, i pulled over turned jeep off, got some fuel out from my bleed screw on the filter and it was a clean as it was when i put in in the tank. now i was L.O.S.T. in what to do next, so i turned the key put it in gear and it was like nothing happened. no CEL, no nothing!

its never happend agin

I'm talking about the situations where the computer senses something unexpected and either locks up like Windows crashing, or intentionally holds back power.

I think you nailed it Cows.
In my seat of the pants experience, it did not feel like the computer took control of my Liberty, so Catcrd must be talking about something I've never experienced. Sorry to intrude on this thread cat.

Fuel Starvation Lag....that exactly describes it

Are you implying that the ECU in some Jeeps are "crashing" and since it is in a crashed state the CEL won't illuminate and it won't fire the injectors correctly, fire the glow plugs, blah blah (whatever it ceases to do) and cause the loss in power? This loss in power is not technically "Limp mode" since the ECU did not read and respond to a malfunction.. but rather just a loss in power from a non-responsive ECU and poorly running engine?

I think shutting the engine off and restarting it could temporarily relieve the air situation. The cascade valve in the CP3 is designed to pass more fuel to the return line during initial cranking. One of the listed reasons for this in the FSM is that it "allows air to bleed during initial cranking." I think the manual also tells you to crank in short bursts when trying to reprime the system. The functioning of the cascade valve has been posted before. If somebody knows where, that would be great. I'll post it fresh if need be.

well mine is at the dealership for the week... went into Limp mode again on Sat. (5th time in a week) First thing they said when i pulled up was "Hey want to trade it in?" I said "sure! as long as its for an 08 Libberty CRD..." They just looked at me funny and walked off! so im waiting the phone call to tell me Bad fuel, Air in lines, Cat 2 is the cause, lift kit is causing it, not enough oil in the CAC hose and tubro, no soot in motor, EGR is to clean... blah blah blah...

I have had this happen 3 times, however since the changover to ULSD the problem seems to have gone away. I did throw a code, P0209 if I recall correctly. The error when I looked it up was "Turbo-Under-Pressure".

In my case the ECU did record a fault code, but did not illuminate the CEL. Stop and restart fixed it, and no problem with blown CAC hoses, etc. Like several others reported I heard a 'Bang' the first time it happened, but not the other times.

Thinking about it, IMHO, the engine did act just like blowing off an intercooler hose, and the P0209 code supports it. But what would cause boost to drop to zero then magically come back after a restart? Maybe the EGR valve getting stuck?

Anyway, hopefully it never comes back. Perhaps it should be called the "P0209 Fault" if anyone else gets the same error code...

It has never happened to me.

3 times to me, a simple restart works wonders. I have noticed every time though that the turbo does not work while in limp mode, super gutless.

I took my CRD off-roading once in some really deep water and it went into limp mode and threw some faulty codes because the electronics started shorting out and freaking. It was the true limp mode where the transmission and engine are limited so much that it barely moves. Good thing the interstate ramps are plenty long in Florida, because it took me the whole length of it to get up to highway speed. Any amount of throttle and it started dropping RPMs real fast.

I drove it home in limp mode, let it dry for a little bit, cleared the codes, then started it back up and took it for a test drive, and everything was fine and dandy.

Lesson learned: high-tech automotive electronics and swamp water don't mix well.
Also, your carpet will smell musty and foul a few days after getting swamp water in it.
