I am wondering if I should trade the KJ nad buy E-spec KK with the CRD and import it to the US. Really the engine base is there and the chassis is there so why not? Maybe they would not let me keep the headlights and the tailights but I can get around that. My only issue is paying the german price with the high euro rate. BTW it would be a sport as the Limited has too much painted to get messed up. i like bumping into things without a care to what the paint looks like.

Years ago I thought it was pretty easy to import a car you already owned and had driven for a time in Europe if you were in the military.

Import regulations
I think it's easy to import something that's already approved for sale in the US - I don't think it's easy to import something that's not approved - and a CRD KK would not be approved from an emissions standpoint. you might have to bring it up to US specs before you could register it. Not certain but there were some earlier discussions about trying to import a Wrangler CRD.

its essentially impossible to do legally-search about RIs, and all the regs from the NHTSA, youll see it aint easy.

with some creative importing you could do it though.

Although not certified for us emissions the KK should absolutely meet the specs in most states in an actual test. most E-spec vehicles already meet Epa requirements under most driving conditions but because they are very close to maximum allowable concentrations of Nox etc.. they are not offered for sale here. Put some premium D2 in it and It should pass with no problem.

It's still out of the box for current emissions due to differences between Euro classifications and EPA regs so it'd be hard to get in. Additionally, the engines are calibrated for European 50+ cetane fuel - they tend to misfire on crappy US low-cetane (40-ish) fuel. There are also some differences re: 5-mph bumpers between EU and NAFTA. Also, the base engine (RA428) isn't used in anything in the US and parts in this country don't exist for sale so you'd be up a creek without a paddle.

The KK is built in the US and has all EPA/NHTSA parts on it to include the 2.5mph bumpers required in the US unlike Canada wich requires the 5mph bumpers. The KK is in production in the US as the Nitro as well as in the EU. The 2.8 CRD is the same as in the KJ and comes in the Nitro and the Cherokee/Liberty, I asked that question at IAA last month. I ma not worried about emmissions as of 2006 all Diesels were required to have a particle filter installed on them, hence why the Germans are hot on my Liberty it does not have one nor is it required. There parts readily available, if not non of you would be getting you KJ CRD fixed. I am very aware of importing a NON-Conforming auto to the US. Back in 2003 I looked at importing a Focus RS into the US and it would have cost me $170,000 to do so. I have kept tabs on importing several auto to coming close to importing a 94-96 Ford Escort RS or even a RS200 to the US. The KK makes the most sense as it is sold in the US, will meet all the regulations and has parts readily available. I could buy it and drive it to any Jeep Dealer and have it serviced.

I've been looking into importing a 1998 Subaru Impreza 22B STi to the US for years.. Every channel I went down I kept getting told "it's impossible" even though the US has a version of the impreza in that year. I was told the window glass, bumpers and emissions were problems. I've seen 1 cosworth escort here in Dallas, TX once... so it seems to be possible to bring in one of them at least... I'm interested in how you plan on importing a KK CRD or Nitro CRD.

Since when after like 1985 has glass been an issue on importing? Unless Japan has some substandard glass all windshileds since about 1985 has been safety laminated. Now on the other issues I can see. have you checked the NTHSB EPA cleared cars for importation?

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/imp ... 010807.pdf

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/imp ... BILITY.htm

Just to start out. Also SOMETIMES it is easier to import a LHD version of the car instead of a RHD version. Look around as you would be amazed at what comes in LHD.
