Truck bed coating

Well i had an idea and went with it. I picked up a can of truck bed coating from duplicolor, used it on my fender flares and rear bumper....looks great. Just need to pick up a few more cans to do the front end now. Its nice cuz its a heavy duty paint and has a textured feel to it(also looks better than the stock grey flares on the sport). I'll try and get some pics posted very soon.

hey, i used a can of that stuff on my rock rails. i really like the finish a lot, and i just got done wheeling it today with a couple of rock contacts on the rails, and it holds up pretty well. still scrapes off of course, but its way tougher then paint.

i'm also planning on doing my flares and bumpers, but i'm waiting to get renegade "bolt on" flare first, cause they look super cool! cant wait to see the pics!

Thinking about fabbing my own cross bars and putting this same stuff on them. Any word on how it holds up against U.V. rays and weather?

well, i havent had mine on long, but it should do great as it is designed for lining truck beds...

I read elsewhere on here that it turns gray from the UV.

Depending on what brand you use, the color will fade to gray from the UV exposure. The Line-X brand (have to have applied) has a UV protectant...I don't know if you can get any of the self apply one with a UV protectant in it already or if you can add one yourself. Suposedly Herculiner does not fade as quickly as some of the others but I have not yet applied mine.

Hey,

Did my chrome grille after a stone from the expreeway chipped it. I used Herculiner. LOOKS GREAT!!.

Has gone from the semi gloss to a matte finish . I have heard the it will grey as time goes by, but can use a uv coating to stop/slow that.

Love it with the rubbery texture. Bugs hate it.

It is a Polyurethane base coating so it bonds to itself which makes it a breeze to repair with a small can of Herculiner.

the duplicolor stuff is not a rubbery texture. its plasticy; feels similar to the sport fender flares.

I have used the duplicolor stuff, as i experimented with the off the shelf stuff in preperation to do my grille.

I sprayed it on some old fog lights as a test. I had the lights in the lid of a rubbermaid trash can . Duplicolor coated the lights great as well as the trash can lid.

Later as the trash can lid was flexed and bent the duplicolor stuff flaked off and completely fell off.

I would be concerned about it doing that on the flexible fender flares.

The herculiner seems more flexible and because of its rubbery texture seams, i repeat SEEMS to be a better choice. I brushed it on the grille afte some rather extensive sanding. So I did not have any in the trash can lid as I did the Duplicolor.

yea i used the duplicolor, and as far as flaking goes, i really hope my flares and bumpers aren't doing any flexing and bending.

youre right about that. the only time i could see my flares flexing would be if my tires were rubbing them. (which happens). but if they are flexing enough for the paint to flake off, then ive got bigger problems. like the fact that my jeep has just rolled over, or the side of it is sitting against a tree trunk, or something like that.

Point well taken.

BUT If you are going to use a product, both about the same price, why not use one that will withstand the hazards of those mall drivers as they back out of their parking spaces. If you roll ur KJ then you do have bigger issues. but why use something that will more likely fail due to something OUT of your control.

I know the poly based herculiner will hold up better, so far it does, and be much easier to patch. The paint on ur flares is poly base also, allowing it to flex more.
