you might want to read my previous post i never claimed it was an nv. i claimed it was a bigger case than the 231, and i also claimed it wasn't the 242, and finally i claimed it was related (similair) to the 241 in the trucks. now my 241 doesn't have a pto like the truck but i bet the the liberty 241 shares some internals with the trucks. as far as the pictures go, i proved my case. mike

Yea we know that you didnt claim it was an NV like the other uninformed guys were spoutin off with  BUT you did say this...

k99jk99j wrote:
ok just climbed under it it says 241J nothing else but the serial # and the model #.

it does not give a designation of nv or np in front of it. mike

Chris was pointin out that the desgination of NP and NV is RIGHT THERE in the pic you posted!!! It says NEW PROCESS right on the tag, therefore there is a desgination, makin it the NP241J

i'm not tryin to get on your nerves and i see it says new process but all the other cases i have (in other jeeps) clearly say np then a space infront of the 231 242 etc... i believe it is an np but it is just not clear from the factory. and i think that is where all the confusion with everybody else is coming from. mike

It is not like the NV241HD found in the dodge trucks ,the guts in those are MUCH BIGGER
it is more like the guts of a NP231 in a bigger housing

And to proving your case the big issue is with the NP and NV that is all
we know NP made a 241 that was used in LIGHT duty trucks up to 1/2 ton and LIGHT duty 3/4 ton
they are slightly different as far as input shafts but the in sides are basicaly 231's
and if you look under a TJ with a NP231 it has only 231 stamped in it NO J after the number
that is because they were ONLY used in jeeps
the 241 you have was used by GM and Dodge as well as Jeep thus the 241J
I dont know for sure but I would bet that a NP241 in a GM truck would read
241GM
Just a guess thow

This is from another topic and i coppied and pasted it from another site a while back
note the NP231/241
note also the "tipically found in V8 aplications" this is why I keep saying
"they are the same guts in a different housing"

Starting in about 1987, the New Process 231/241 series transfer case became standard in Jeep, Dodge, and Chevrolet applications. These transfer cases are part time 4WD (Shift positions 2HI - 4HI - N - 4L). They have a relatively thin aluminum housing. They are 1:1 direct drive in high range, and use planetary reduction gears for low range with a ratio of 2.72:1 They use chain drive for the front output. The NP241 was typically used in V8 applications.
Exact identification:

These New Process cases have a circular plate, about 2" in dia., on the rear of the case, in the center. Full identification info for the case is on this plate

Like Jason said yall, carry over from another thread...Jaws of Death and hoopersfish proved themselves wrong, they DONT have a NV241 like they claim

Brian & every one else
I dont want this to sound like a pissing contest
but fact is KJ's have NP cases in them
and for that matter the weaker of the case offered is the NP242 and I would bet that less than 1% of all KJ owners would push their KJ harder than what a NP242 case can handle let alone the NP231 so to sit there and and drool over a "stronger" T-case is just dumb

It is simply a marketing ploy to make you think you are getting some thing special so you pay more for a case you do not need and they pay very very little ,Chrysler owns NV who owns NP and after some time this year will be owned by some one else so who knows what you will get

I have a NP242 in the KJ it is more than strong enough for a KJ
My TJ has a NP231 it is SYE'd and next year will be terra lowed
I know what I have and what it can do/have done

I really don't think it was a marketing ploy. I called my service dealer and he thought it had a 231 as well. They don't push the fact that the 6 speeds come with the 241's at all.(maybe the new models come w/231's?) I can't imagine that the231 isn't strong enough for the 6 speeds. Going on line, the 241's look to be about $100 more than the 231's. So why would chrysler put a more expensive case in a vehicle that lists quite a bit less than the autos? Is there a need for added transfer case size and/or strength w/ the 6 speeds? I don't think so. Maybe jeep had a bunch of these older 241's laying around and wanted to get rid of them. I do not know sales #'s, but the auto way out sells the manuals. So with the relatively small manual units being sold, maybe they thought of it as a perfect opportunity to put em on the manuals. So what do you guys think? Is chrysler just unloading old product?

i don't think they are unloading old stock, because almost all manufactures employ just in time manufacturing (to keep inventory low). i think it was more likley an engineering decision which we will probably never here the reason why? maybe it was cheaper to enginneer the np241j on the back of the sixspeed? who knows? i agree with you about the marketing! when i ordered mine they swore (dealer)it would have the 231. and then it shows up with the np241j? everbody was mystified and a call to the district rep couln't even solve the riddle. i'm happy however! mike

Thanks for the reply Mike. I think everyone is kind of in shock that it is even in there. We know how the manufacturers can try to pinch pennies i.e. window regulators! But as you said, I am glad it is in mine as well. :o

You kinda hit the nail on the head
jeep probably agreed to X number of units and then changed their minds on the new grands
I dont know for sure but I think that the TJ sport with the six speed came with a np231

I was told once "the jeep Liberty is kinda like the sensored word step child from the merger of Chrysler and Dimler Benz
this is why it is inconsistant in what it comes with and why they changed so much in 5 years of production"
I think this may be correct

If anyone is interested in what the 241 guts look like, you can download the fiche file at:
http://colorado4wheel.com/manuals/Jeep/KJ/
(thanks sirsam)
and download your years parts manual. For the 2006 year, on page 394 it has the breakdown of the 241. (The 231 and 242 can be seen as well).
Stick a fork in this thread, it is done...
