Air intake question

I see that a lot of owners have K&N air filters on their Jeeps. I want to know if I should go with the air filter or the air intake from K&N? And have you owners been pleased with the upgrade from your stock filters/air box? Thanks in advance for the info

I have the stock drop in, but i kept my paper filter for on the trails if it is either really dusty or i plan on going into water...i got a bit better gas mileage (1.5mpg increase on the highway) with the drop in...i personally dont want to get rid of my stock box. It looks to be one of the best boxes out there as far as the intake and filter is up real high with plenty of room for drainage if i do get a bit of water in there...
As for the FIPK from K&N, i dont like it b/c it could let water into the engine much easier than the stock box...if i wanted something that would really need somethine like that, i would have bought a sports car....

The K&N one should be fine as long as you're not doing deep water crossings, correct?

What's the price on a K&N drop in filter anyway? I keep seeing it on Ebay for $40 (or around there) and I always forget to check the prices outside. I think I remember seeing it for $50-$55 once but not sure.

I was also thinking of switching too for the possible increase in gas mileage but I have no complaints about stock and I wasnt sure if it actually made a difference.

I actually won mine from Jeepfest a few months back, but i believe they run $40-50 depending on where you get them...IMO it's worth getting, just so i dont have to replace the paper ones every 7-10k miles. That and over the life of the vehicle, you will proabaly replace the paper ones 10 times and will definitely recoop the cost of the k&n...like i said i keep the paper one for very dusty conditions and water...

My K&N FIPK gave me an extra 1 to 1.5 mpg.

That works, I will have to check it out and see. I have been thinking of getting it but I havent gotten around to it. You have to buy the oil and all that for it too right?

Comes oiled and ready so you don't need to worry about it for a while.

I have the K&N Aircharger. I noticed a slight increase in MPG. It also sounds pretty cool also.(cool sucking noise when getting on the throtle). I bought a sleeve that goes over it. It's called a "dry charger" and it repells water and dust. I only use this when wheeling to keep dust and splash back out of it. When it needs reoiled, its nice to spend a little time massaging your jeep stuff!

I've had the intake with the dual K&N filters on for about 6 weeks now. Not much improvement in mileage, but a noticeable difference in the throttle. Not a lot, but definetly noticeable. Yea, it sounds cool also.

It's not a K&N intake, only the filters are K&N. I got it off ebay for $120 from a company called "Chrome Intakes". It included the intake and both filters with all the connecting hardware. Installation took less than 45 minutes. I will try to post pictures later.

The K&N FIPK has puts the filter into its own 'cold air' compartment. Its also the only one that's C.A.R.B. certified so you can use it in CA.

I recall the duals sit right over the engine.

I have always been weary of these with the metal pipes and filter on the end. Isnt the point to get fresh COOL air into the engine? These metal jobbers get very hot, especially if mounted on top of the engine, and probably just heat the air as it goes through the pipe. What you need is a nice heat resistant plastic pipe with the K&N on the end no?

You can't see it in my photo but the air sensor is mounted on the rear right side with a rubber grommet. Yea it gets a little warm, and like I said, there is not much change in MPG. But it does look and sound nice, and you can feel the difference in the throttle

When I added the hood that dumps air right into the compartment for the K&N FIPK, it made as much difference as the FIPK and exhaust combined.

It would seem to me, with both of the filters on, and bouncing across a rocky type road, you chould snap something off. Plus heat soak would also be a problem.
