Here is a :?: in which I have not seen on any postings about Replacing your coil packs.

When do you plan to replace or when have you replaced your coild packs?

or is there any need to replace them for maint?

I have always replaced my plugs at every 25k miles. this is on all of the jeeps that I have owned. I usally changed the wires/dist cap @ every 50K.

When do I replace coil packs? I am pushing 100K and on factory coil packs.

when they go out lol. On my old car, i didnt have to replace them until 196k. Its obvious when they go out, your vehicle will run like crap lol.

it depends on how hard the coils have worked. example is: a new spark plug will make the coils throw out roughly around 11,000 volts to 15,000 volts. that is not working hard at all. but if you never change your plugs your coils could be throwing out roughly 60,000 volts depending on the gap and wear on the plug. if the plugs were changed every 10,000 miles i would let the coils go till they show a problem! but if they have worked hard i might think about replacing them. mike

Got ya.
I am getting ready to hit 100K now and I drive my jeep ALOT. about 1k a week give or take.
I was just wondering if this is putting stress on the packs. When I change my plugs @ every 25K they look normal wear. no nasty burns, oil marks. stuff like that. just normal clean firing on the plugs.

if they didn't look to bad you should be all right! but some people on lost pull there plugs out at the same mileage and they are toast (might be driving style or another variable). Are you mostly highway miles? that could explain it. but if you have access to dealership equipment you can see how many volts it is taking to fire each coil. thus determining the need for new plugs. or you can do what the rest of us do (since copper core plugs are cheap) just replace them often. mike

p.s. it is very hard to determine the reliabilty of a coil. the are epoxied and the only way to check them is with a dig.volt meter or other dealership type equipment. sometimes they ohlm out perfect and are still defective.

wow intresting on that 200K plus KJ.

most of my driving is highway, but I do alot of local trips.

I am probally going to keep the stock inplace. I will drive it untill it starts to run like crap then I will replace the coil packs.

thanks to all for your input and links

How do you check them with a digital meter?

you check resistance on the primary side and then the secondary side. if you have a haynes manual it is in chapter 5 pages 5 and 6. mike

according to haynes the primary should have a resistance of .6-.9 ohms
and the secondary is 6000-9000 ohms
