My interpretation of the new President's statement is that the JEEP brand has a certain cache and market niche that is unique unto itself and that it can be enhanced and leveraged. The brand has been watered down lately with the Patriot and Compass, ugh. If JEEP (freedom to go anywhere) can take this brand name that is on par with Land Rover (for adventure), Harley Davidson (carefree image), Mercedes, Porsche and BMW (Luxury and performance), Ferrari and Lamborghini (exotic) and show how unique it is, no one can touch it. It reminds me of an article I read of a car designer bemoaning the fact that, "Lexus can make the best car in the world, but it will never be a Mercedes".

Of course they will go after money, that is the nature of business. But they can make JEEP a more lucrative brand that will draw in more money. It's all a matter of perception anyway. 98% of the 4wheel drive vehicles out there do not see 4wheel drive action but the perception of "ruggedness" is what sells. See the H2... If they can leverage the long history of the brand, the many technological firsts in the industry, build a capable, quality product and market the Image, JEEP is saved. All we have to do is look at the current line-up and compare it to the recent concept vehicles. I like the concept line-up much more than the actual line-up. JEEP needs to wake up and see what they're building.

Marketing is clever lying anyway. Do we really need that new this or that? No, but they tell us we do. What will kill JEEP is if they market the brand correctly and build something that is less capable than a JEEP. If they go that route, the JEEP name will become the biggest lie of all. JEEP will stand for wanna-be offroad.

However, with these most recent comments, I am hopeful that JEEP is on the right track.

JEEP. There is only one.

My .02

Jeep IS known for off-road vehicles. Whenever there is an accident here in Colorado and it was a Jeep model, the press will just say a "Jeep" was involved with an accident and it could be any model Jeep. BUT, if any other other vehicle is in a wreck, they will name the vehicle by model, not by brand. You won't see them say Chrysler or Ford or Oldsmobile or Pontiac or Chevrolet. They might say Dodge SUV or Chevy pickup though they are still breaking it down. They will just say JEEP, in the article though. I kind of hate that because you don't know what kind of Jeep went off a cliff or wrecked in an accident on the highway.

What other company has a long standing name for off-road capable vehicles? Land Rover. They tried a watered-down Land Rover model, Freelander and it stunk. It was an Escape, Rav4, CRV in disguise. Not really a true Land Rover.

Jeep has ventured into non-Jeep territory and that will water down its image.

All Jeep needs for models are:

The standard Jeep, Wrangler and...it's varying models are fine
Full-size SUV (Grand Cherokee)
Mid-Size SUV (Liberty)
Pickup, standard size - they need to bring the pickup back.

That is it. Yes, the Liberty (KJ) is truly a mid-sized SUV and not compact, yet it was always marketed to compete with the compacts so it would stand alone in off-road capability vs those car-SUV's.

I think TokyoJoe's right. A Jeep pickup the size of a 2nd or 3rd generation Dakota would be a great boon to the Jeep lineup. Maybe a KK based one, bring back the Comanche name? I think we can pretty much say goodbye to any chance of a JK based pickup any time soon.

I'd get in line for a CRD MK regular cab with a 6 speed:D

Ummmm....so why did they make the COMPASS?

Again, this is the new guy, hired by the new owners, talking about a new direction. Dr. Z & DCX came up with that compass piece of crap!

I still think they will come out with whatever is "hot" or selling at the time regardless of what it does to their image (within reason - i.e. Compass). Their "fix" will be testing on the Jeep course and slapping a "Trail Rated" badge on it. Then put their spin on it to the media with some new marketing scheme and see how it sells.

I think you're right. Not only that, I think it (or the PT Snoozer) was the first actual DC vehicle, since most everything else that came out before then (but AFTER the merger) was already in the works.

Anybody else think it's odd that the YJ is introduced for the 87 Model year, and Chrysler absorbs AMC...and the TJ comes out for '97, and DaimlerBenz merges with ChryCo, and then in '07 Daimler sells off a large part of their share to Cerberus when the JK debuted for the '07 model year?

Just conspiracy theorizing, don't mind me.

Too bad the Jeep product line doesn't reflect that statement. I feel Jeep should be about being capable off road. Look at the history. I wish they would stick with real off road capable vehicles. Not the stupid 2wd versions or things like the Patriot and the Compass.
