I was in an accident thursday

The roads were wet from an all-day rain. the Xterra in front of me panic stopped. I hit my brakes but the ABS kicked in and i hit his rear bumper. Radiator is damaged so i can't drive it. The Insurance company told me not to touch it until they inspect it

. All i can do is sit here and stare at it.

His rear bumper was dented a bit. No damage to his tailgate or anything else.

BTW, have i mentioned how much i hate anti-lock brakes. I could have stopped on a dime if it wasn't for that Ralph Nader device.

If i was allowed to work on it, i could have the radiator replaced in a hour. The headlite is an easy repair as well. I could be on the road tomorrow afternoon instead of relying on a rental car.

Did your ABS kick in because you didn't have traction? If you didn't have traction, you weren't going to stop on a dime unless you threw an anchor out the window.

If you feel your ABS kicked in prematurely then you should take it up with the dealer.

The very reason I feel lucky to have a KJ with no ABS. I had several close calls with my old car that had ABS. I hated it. I actually had some work done at the dealer and the ABS was starting to fail on that car (a SVT contour) The guy at the stealership told me $1950 to repair the ABS hydraulics. I told him how much I hated it as you have no control over the breaking. You are at the mercy of the device. Anyhow, he asked me if I wanted it disabled (this from a dealership) and I said heck yeah...what's the down side...he told me, "your ABS light will be on in the dash"...that's it? I asked and he said yep. Going back to standard brakes was a great. I love not having them in the KJ too....ABS is a idiot device for the masses of sheople who can't handle the car in a panic situation. My meaning is that, the driver should be able to "pump" their own brakes and have total control over the speed and quantity of the pumping (or lock them up if I think that's a better solution)...I don't need the car deciding that for me.

sorry to hear about the fender bender...I've been there and its such a hassle. I never get good sleep until the car is returned to normal and back in the garage. good luck with the insurance...hope they take care of ya.

I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ABS. I WRECKED MY CAVALIER THE SAME WAY AND I COULD ALMOST BET MY LIFE ON IT THAT IF I DIDNT HAVE ABS I WOULD HAVE STOPPED. IT JUST WOULDNT LOCK THE TIRES AND STOP ME. HAHA

i hate to tell you this but ABS does not affect your stopping distance in any way. in fact if anything it helps shorten it.

Once your wheels lock up they lose grip with the road. That is why Airplanes switched to ABS back in the 60's, It greatly reduced the stopping distance.

Ever driven in snow? Turn your front wheels towards one side and stomp on your breaks, Your front end will slide straight forward. Now while still sliding , Let off your breaks and your vehical will resume turning with minor slipage. Try it next time your driving off road in some snow.

I otally agree..however, I'm saying the same thing...with ABS, you do not have that option. For ABS to perform to its peak, you need to keep constant pressure on the brake, allowing it to pulse on its own accord. I PREFER to do that myself. Just like you say, I prefer (especially in snow) to pump, let off the break if I'm still not stopping, gain control, break some more, steer and break in my own designs...with the ABS, you simply have to apply the brake and hopeit does its thing in a short enough distance. If the ABS is not stopping you, you have to let off the brake anyhow, and try to maneuver, defeating the ABS system anyhow. I think we are saying the same thing, tho I'm probably not stating it as such. I simply like to perform my own abs-like breaking by pumping the breaks myself...I'm in control, not the car's system. ABS does stop the car shorter, but its for those who cannot perform breaking maneauvers on their own...its a feel good, ensure safety for the MASSES system that does good. I for one prefer it without and doing my own braking...I guarantee, with proper pumping and steering maneuvers, I can stop as short or shorter than relying 100% on ABS in less than perfect conditions...I've been there before, standing on the pedal in snow, hoping the pulsing brakes where going to stop me short of the guy in front...if you let off the ABS...you are back to square one...If you pump an ABS break, the ABS is not going to work...its stand on the peddle and pray time with ABS. It has its merits for people who are accustomed to locking up their brakes in an accident situation...those who can handle the panic and still think about what it takes to stop safely without locking up the wheels can do as good or better without ABS, IMO.

I think we all understand how ABS works. It does in fact stop you in a shorter distance when you slam on the breaks. Now I have never owned a vehicle with ABS nor do I have one now, but I have driven many vehicles with ABS. I did however watch a video when I was in a defensive driving class after getting a speeding ticket that demonstrated how well ABS worked. They had a police cruiser that was equipped with ABS and they did a 100mph - 0 stop slamming on the breaks. One run with ABS off and one with it one. On the run with it off you had all kinds of smoke from the tires and some really nice black marks. The run with it on as you can imagine no smoke and really no black marks, and it did stop something like 50 feet shorter than just locking them up. Afterwards they showed the tires from both runs and the run with no ABS made a very nice flat spot on the tires. Before seeing that I really didn't know much about it but after seeing that I was more knowledgeable about it capabilities. Hope this helps for anyone. I agree though I am not a big fan of the ABS not because of how it works but how much it costs to repair the ABS when it does go bad. FYI generally ABS is controlled by a fuse and by removing that fuse you turn off your ABS.
