So my muffler sounds louder/more shakey. It's been raining for two days straight and this afternoon I had to take a detour that took me through a dirt road with mud puddles  . Now I am getting a louder sound (at first) and some vibration (at first couple of miles). Could there be some water in the muffler/exhaust causing this? thanks.

Maybe it broke somewhere. In my youger days when i had my first hoopty toyota pickup i blasted through a puddle and it blew the darn muffler off the truck!! Maybe the pipe going into the muffler cracked or something.

splash through any big puddles? that's what blew mine off that time. might just need to crawl under there and do a visual inspection.

Hey Albert: Is that an Albert Einstein theory? :D :D I think mine did the same thing. I'll have to check it.

Back in the old days my wife had a 95 Plymouth Neon. When that engine was hot and you hit a puddle or even just drove on wet roads, the water hitting the exhaust manifold and the engine caused the exhaust to pull away from the manifold enough to make it sound like she had no exhaust.

There was a 25 step (or so) TSB out on it but of course the cheap Dealer she went to did one step only at a time so she got tired of it and traded that puppy in.

Long story shortened, water on hot parts cause cause them to move differently since there are lots of metal types. It can also cause cracks and breaks.

So I checked underneath. Everything is tight. I rev'd the engine and all sounds good. If I had a crack, you should here it right? scanner shows everything is good. I did find a rock lodged between my tranny skid and exhaust. This could have been the noise/vibration i was hearing/feeling.

DO NOT REMOVE THE TRANNYS/SKID ROCK DEVICE!! It's integral to offroading. !!

That's got to be the culprit. Did you drive it thru some puddles since the rock removal yet??

No not yet. I got this look  from my wife today when I told her I found it and was gonna go out to make sure it was good. She gave me a grocery list instead. Good thing the libby is grocery rated or I wouldn't be able to go there.
