So if I go from my stock 235/70/16 Wrangler SR-A’s @32 lbs to a tire that is 245/70/16 Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo’s @36lbs each I’m going to loose 2 mpg’s? I guess the weight difference is not as great as the example above so please tell me it won’t be that much. Is the effect more b/c of the weight of the tire and the effort it takes to rotate the extra mass or is more a result of a different more aggressive and wider tread pattern?
As it is I avg anywhere from 20 – 24mpg in just highway driving and anything from 13-16mpg in true (NYC) city driving. Will I feel that 2mpg loss more in city driving due to the constant adjustment to the rotation of the tire and the extra mass or more on the highway where the extra rotation mass could have a multiplying effect at speeds?
well, going up 4 pounds is not that much. not like going up 10 pounds each or 20-25 pounds each with the KO/Grabber. I doubt you will see much of a decrease. But you will definitely take a bigger hit in the city due to stopping and starting with heavier, more roll resisting treads that are wider. Once driving on the highway and sustaining, it doesnt take nearly as much to keep the car rolling at cruising speed. Its the constant start and stop that makes a difference...but again, 4 pounds is negligible. thats only 20 extra pounds for 5 tires as opposed to 5 KOs increasing the wight by 100 lbs or so. 5X as much weight and seriously aggressive treads for simple city/highway driving.
