There's a local listing for some Moabs that I want to get, but they're magnesium coated. Has anyone heard of this. Is this like powder coat?

Here's a pic

EDIT: Ok, nevermind about magnesium coating. The guy said it cost like $100 a wheel to coat them, but he said the wheels are Magnesium?? He said the wheels have a texture, but its like powder coat

MOAB's are aluminum, mag rims are very expensive and a major fire hazard for a offroad vehicle since if you get a flat and spark it against a rock the mag rim can start on fire.Jeep wouldn't use mag rims on a vehicle ment for hardcore offroading, that would be a major disaster waiting to happen.

So would the roughness be a good thing? Would they be easier to clean?
He's asking $250 for 4 which I think is pretty good, but he said his friend paid the price for coating

ive never heard of a magnesium wheel "catching fire." magnesium powder and ribbons will ignite, but not solid pieces.

the roughness would actually hold the dirt I would think, you could always get them and sand them down and repaint them maybe, 250 for 4 is not too bad I would offer 2 or 225 and see what he says  A lot of people will run from those so it may make it easier for you to get them

They do look kinda funny, but I want black wheels, either get some Soft 8's or paint my sport wheels black. But I thought this would be a good deal, and who knows maybe they may look good. I think sanding that finish off would be a big PITA tho, so I don't know about that.

Magnesium wheels can catch on fire. Typically when the wheel scrapes against the pavement or other hard surface. Generally these wheels are used in racing which increases their chances of catching fire due to higher speeds, flats and accidents. There is no four-wheeling application for magnesium alloy wheels. The only advantage of these wheels is their light weight.

Those wheels don't look that great. If you want black moabs, I'd buy a set and have them done, or buy those and have them redone.

Edit: If you want to talk to someone who has had his moabs painted, talk to the owner of this KJ. I think his name on here is Green Renegade or something similar. Troy or Marty could probably give you his name. They aren't black, but whatever he had done to them, either powdercoating or painting looks awesome.

heres his write up

http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=23649

and here is what he said about his wheels:

The moabs were off an '06 Rubicon, so they were in really good shape, other than some very minor rock rash. All I did was scour them with a scotch brite pad, and then clean them REALLY well with soap and water. Then I painted them with Rustoleum hammered paint. This stuff is really durable, and helps hide dings and scratches. I used dark bronze, but it also comes in black (which really looks dark gray), and a variety of other colors. I'll just touch them up as the paint gets scraped off on rocks, and hopefully keep them looking decent.

Sidenote: I know these aren't magnesium wheels but there wouldn't be a problem with the magnesium alloys they use on structural metals such as wheels and bicycle frames. Assuming one were to use a magnesium alloy that could be ignited, the whole rim itself would not burn. I would imagine that the problem with older magnesium rims came about when a flat tire caused the rim to drag on the pavement and released magnesium shavings on to the car behind the wheel (these would be small enough to ignite under such conditions). Those "sparks" would be hot enough to cause the car to flash in no time at all.... just my $.02

Never seen a solid block of magnesium (or potassium) tossed into a tub of water, have you.... usually you don't have a tub anymore.

From the experts (magnesium.com):

"4. Flammability. While magnesium does not burn unless it melts, finely divided powder and shaving created in fabrication operations can catch fire. In any case, it is an area that must be constantly addressed. As long as science teachers in high school classes continue to burn pieces of magnesium ribbon, the image of the bright white fire will far surpass any knowledge of the fire resistance of solid magnesium. "

Magnesium also does not actively react with water.... potassium and sodium are the two that are most common experiments showing reactivity with water.

This is turning into a great science discussion, but I'm not going to get these wheels. I looked at summit and they have the Cragar Soft 8's for $53. Is this a sale. I thought I remember them being like $65 each.

Back to the chemistry
If magnesium was flammable I don't think that they would be using it on wheels, considering how hot the brakes get. Even if a piece were to chip off, if it hit the brakes and caught fire, the wheel companies would have had many lawsuits by now
