Rear Tail Lamp Protection?

Okay, we have all seen the cheapo (material certainly not price) stick-on Mopar tail lamp guards for the KJ.

Has anybody come up with a better solution made out of something like, oh, I don't know,... METAL!!! :wink:

Or is it really necessary to have anything? Has anyone here actually broken a tail lamp off-road (and no I don't mean by backing into something that was just a stupid mistake)?

I know someone did on a Jeep Jambo run in West VA, caught it on a tree...W3CSX or something like that was his name, he has since bought a TJ I think though...

Better, but you are still talking about something that basically adhears to the plastic lamp housing itself with 3M tape. It gets hit and it is still going to transfer the shock to the plastic housing.

Everything I have seen is advertised with "easy to install 3M tape". I'd rather have something that was actually secured to a bracket somewhere. Though I have had a lamp out to replace a break light bulb, and I'll be the first to admit, there isn't much there.

A metal bolt on braket runs the risk of bending sheet metal if you hit something with it.
IMHO its cheaper just to replace the lens if it gets damaged. I think they are about $50 on ebay. I've seen some going for as low as $25.

Oh, I actually agree with you on this. I guess I was just hoping that someone had found some nifty way to secure to someting structural under the sheet metal that could actually absorb the shock. The sheet metal isself is way too thin and screws would just rip right out of it!!!

Just a "what if" mental exercise, anyway. :lol:

I looked at those metal tail-lamp "guards." But for the price you pay for them, you can armor half of the underside of your Jeep. I say just smash, replace, repeat. It'd take 5 or 6 $25 replaced taillights to equal the price of a set of metal "guards" anyway.
