Oh, good. I always thought you had problem with redtop while driving.
So if battery dies while driving, what happens? I always thought nothing should happen since battery is only needed for reserve or crank power, other than that as long as you are driving, the engine should provide enough power to the vehicle to keep it safely going?
Not completely true. ask troy about this
but when my wifes 02 battery went dead all kinds of weird stuff happened. Once I got it satrted, the PCM needs the ballanced power from the battery to function properly. So Yes it is needed constantly.
Newer electronic vehicles will not run right without a good battery or a good alternator.A alternator(hence not being called a generator) needs battery power to make power,if you remove the battery from the circuit it will not work right.
WoodysKJ is right about the vehicle operating funny with a bad battery. The voltage regulator is in the PCM and the PCM is very picky about voltage spikes.

i work at an autoparts store in the defectives department, we get the least % back of the optimas compared to any other brand.
thats odd, most of them we sell come back within' a year
I ran a Red Top from about 100 miles till I got my winch in '06 then changed to a Yellow Top.The Red Top is in my old man's tractor and still going strong(5 1/2 years) and zero problems with my yellow top so far.I have run my winch many times and crank my 750watt amp all the time without my engine running for over 60 min at a time and my KJ starts up with zero hesitation.
In Iraq and Afganistan we converted almost all our vehicles to Red Tops since the crappy Interstate batteries maybe lasted 5-6 days at most in 140+ degree weather.
