Has anybody removed the carpet in the cargo area? What is the best way to remove the rivets for the cargo area tie downs? The service manual is useless (just says to remove/replace them, doesn't say how). I was going to spend Thanksgiving weekend putting some sound deadening down and fixing some rattles, but it doesn't look like there is a relatively easy way to temporarily remove the carpet.

Thanks in advance.

thanks for reminding me...might as well steam clean the carpeting while (or if...) i have it out. I'm guessing the rivets would have to be drilled out. I suppose the dealership could get new rivets.

I know Allyrand had to pull the rivits to get to the the fuel pump or something that got jarred lose. I dont remember though how he reattached it.
I remember seeing that there was a handful of wires in a loom that ran under there. Thought about pulling it too and rhino lining the floor sides and putting some kind of backing on the carpet to line also. But just stuck with Husky and cargo box instead.

The rivets themselves aren't too expensive (P/N 6036 484AA, $1) and if i manage to mess up the tie downs somehow, they aren't that bad either (P/N 5086 138AA, $3.20). The question would be finding the proper tool(s) to get it all back together.

drill them out, then for about 4.99 go down to harbor frieght and get a hand riviting tool with rivits to reinstall them.

on one of my cherokees where I had to put them back in I used some 10mm headed sheet metal style screws, I never took them back off, but I at least had the ability.

No Harbor Freight within 30 miles, but a Fastenal right down the street. I've been meaning to stop in to pick up a tool for the flare rivets. I do like the idea of being able to take them back out tho; if i strike out at Fastenal, that's another idea.

Thanks for the help.
