I am a big fan of rp. I must say though, that I am disturbed by the used oil analysis reports that people are getting w/ their motor oil. Apparently, their numbers are showing that rp really shears down quickly. So, what starts out as 30, relatively quickly shears down to a 20 or lower. This is what I have read, so don't know 1st hand. If you use it, I would not go extended drain. On the other hand, their gear oils are supposedly top notch...
Good luck...

Does going to the 0w30 affect the warranty? That sure sounds like some good oil...

Here are the specs on the AMSOIL 0W-30
Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil (TSO)
Modern passenger car and light truck engines are built for fuel efficiency and power. AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil optimizes efficiency and power without the sacrifice in wear protection that comes with many fuel-efficient, low-viscosity oils.

Testing shows AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil dramatically outperforms popular conventional and synthetic motor oils of typical viscosities in wear protection (see chart below).

See Pricing Information or Place an Order

Package sizes include:

1-Quart Bottle
1-Quart Bottles (case of 12)
1-Gallon Bottle
1-Gallon Bottles (case of 4)
30-Gallon Drum
55-Gallon Drum

Fuel Efficient Formula
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil efficiently transfers energy from the engine to the drivetrain. Its low coefficient of friction inhibits the energy loss to “drag” common to high viscosity oils.

Motorists seeking the ultimate in fuel efficiency may use AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil in place of 5W-30 or 10W-30 motor oils.

High Temperature Protection
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil protects in high temperatures better than the conventional and synthetic oils tested. Even after extended service in the engine, AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil maintains its ability to protect in high temperatures.

Low Temperature Protection
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil is specially formulated for superior cold temperature engine protection. It retains excellent fluidity in extremely low temperatures, so it flows quickly and reliably to allow easy starting and immediate lubricating protection.

Motorists seeking cold temperature dependability and protection may use AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil in place of 5W-30 or 10W-30 motor oils.

Heat Stability
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil is highly resistant to volatility. For example, in heat that causes conventional motor oils to lose as much as 25 percent of their mass, AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil loses less than 10 percent.

AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil’s resistance to volatility keeps oil consumption extremely low and, more importantly, keeps the engine thoroughly lubricated and protected. Its resistance to volatility also helps keep fuel efficiency high and emissions low.

Clean Engine Formula
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil is durable and resists sludge, varnish and other by-products of high-temperature degradation. With no deposits to foul them, engines stay cleaner longer for top performance and efficiency and maximum service life.

Shear Stability
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil is shear stable. With AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil’s excellent viscosity retention, the protection that goes into the engine is the protection that stays in the engine, even over an extended course of severe service.

Application
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil meets or exceeds the engine protection requirements of all domestic and foreign gasoline and diesel engines specifying the following:

API SM/CF, SL, SJ . . .
ILSAC GF-4, 3 . . .
ACEA A5/B5
JASO VTW
GM 4718M, 6094M
Ford WSS-M2C-929A
Chrysler MS-6395N
VW 503
Mixing AMSOIL
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil is compatible with conventional and synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL motor oils.

Service Life
AMSOIL Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified(1), mechanically sound(2) gasoline-fueled vehicles as follows:

Normal Service(3) - Up to 35,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
Severe Service(4) - Up to 17,500 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
Replace AMSOIL Ea™ Full-Flow Oil Filter at the time of oil change up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first (other brands at standard OEM* intervals).
In all other applications, extend the oil change interval according to oil analysis or follow the OEM* drain interval.
*OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer

(1) Engines operating under modified conditions are excluded from extended drain recommendations. Examples include the use of performance computer chips; non-OEM-approved exhaust, fuel or air induction systems; and the use of fuels other than those recommended for normal operation by the manufacturers.

(2) Engines are in good working condition and within the factory design settings. Mechanically sound engines, for example, do not leak oil or consume excessive amounts, are not worn out, do not overheat, do not have internal or external anti-freeze leaks and have properly working emission control systems. AMSOIL recommends repairing malfunctioning engines prior to the installation of AMSOIL synthetic oils.

(3) Personal transportation vehicles frequently traveling greater than 10 miles (16km) at a time and not operating under severe service.

(4) Turbo/supercharged vehicles, commercial or fleet vehicles, excessive engine idling, first and subsequent use of AMSOIL engine oil in vehicles with over 100,000 miles, daily short-trip driving (less than 10 miles), frequent towing, plowing, hauling or dusty-condition driving.

AMSOIL Ea Full-Flow Oil Filters are designed for extended drain intervals. They stop smaller particles, flow more oil and last longer than regular filters. For best performance, use AMSOIL Ea Full-Flow Oil Filters.

HEALTH & SAFETY
This product is not expected to cause health concerns when used for the intended application and according to the recommendations in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). An MSDS is available upon request at 715-392-7101 or on our website. Keep out of the reach of children. Don't pollute. Return used oil to collection centers.

I just switched to royal purple 15w40 and in just the few days it has been in I noticed the engine runs smoother and quieter and feels like it makes more power. I bought it from a company in tulsa and they had the best price I could find on the net. Next I will change out the other fluids much needed after 45,000 miles.

Wow, that is some THICK oil. Is that what is spec'ed for the crd? As you are doing, I definitely would go synthetic for the lower pour point with a thick oil such as this on a cold Kansas morning. Also, is that oil designed for diesels? I believe diesels need much more detergents, and require oil specifically meeting stringent requirements.

Cool, Only a couple bucks less than what I sell the Amsoil SAE 15W-40 Synthetic Heavy Duty Diesel for. (shipped also)
FWIW, I noticed Amsoil has a distribution center in Wichita.

I looked on their site and came across:
Our most popular oil for diesels. Royal Purple® Motor Oil is specially formulated multi-viscosity and straight grades for use in gasoline and diesel engines of all types - from cars and trucks to SUVs, motorcycles and boats. API / ILSAC Certified.

So, I answered my own question. It looks really good...good luck with it

I looked on their site, and yes, it is definitely a diesel oil. Sorry for my ignorance on diesels. (kinda wish I had one!)

I have a customer here in Cali that has a new crate motor too and he runs Amsoil ASL 5W30 in it w/ the Ea series filter. Mobil 1 is considered a synthetic but it Isn't a full synthetic like Amsoil is. That is unless you get their extended performance oil. Synthetic contains the same or better seal conditioners that other oils have so it is fine for all seals and gaskets.

How much did the new engine set you back?

a hundred bucks deductable ;) 7year/70k mile powertrain warranty woohoo :)

so i think i might just get the mobil1 and stick with that. should i still change oil every 3k, or should i go longer like 4-5k?

only becuase it will be more conveniant to go pick it up at autozone than ordering it online. idk anyone around here who sells amsoil. theres a place in stow that sells wix filters though, i heard those are good too. amsoil or mobil1, either way i should be set!!!

thanks!!

OHHH! and should i wait on the mobil1 for a little bit since its synthetic while im breaking in the engine? and just use a regular oil for this oil change THEN switch to mobil1? they put a mopar oil filter and mopar oil in it. i didnt know if synthetic mobil1 would mess up the breakin. i have 1100 miles on the engine right now. i wanna change it asap since its the first oil change of the brand new engine

Mobil broght a lawsuit agents penzoil for calling their synthetic blend a "synthetic" So what makes you think mobil 1 is not a synthetic? I have had 2 race motor apart that used mobil 1 synthetic and both had 60k+ HARD raced miles on them and showed no signs of wear. I have no experience with amsoil (im sure its good) but mobil 1 has been tried and tested in my experience and I have no reason to ever switch. Now mobil gas......that will leave some serious deposits on your valves and pistons. :D

Go back and research Mobils lawsuit against Castrol Syntec where they Lost and Castrol was allowed to call their partial synthetic a "Synthetic". Mobil followed suit and created a similar oil as Castrols. Good business practice too, as it saved them money over using a full syn base stock and allowed the company to realize More profits (yeah even Mobil needs to make a few more Billions) so their shareholders would be happy.

I will admit that you can buy much worse oils than Mobil but don't get caught in the hype they sling when they start talking about Synthetic. They are one of the largest oil producers in the world and they can build whatever oil they chose but they chose to build to a profit point and not a performance point. If I wasn't interested in using the best oil and filters I could find I would go w/ Mobil Extended performance and run a Wix filter and change at just over the old fashioned 3,000 mile interval.
I prefer to run an extended change interval of up to 15K miles or yearly so I go w/ the proven best since 1972. (mobil came out w/ their original Syn, full syn back then, in 1974)

i ran Royal Purple for awhile. But i'd have 2 say AMSOIL, hands down. They exceed every other brand in every independent test i've read.

Very interesting......thanks for that info jjskj, I had no idea. I do use their extended performance oil and mobil 1 extended filter. I have been hearing a lot about wix and purulator (not sure if I spelled that right) filters, How do mobil 1 extended life filters hold up? Im in the same boat as a lot of other people, I've heard great things about amsoil but it sure is a lot easier to go down to autozone and pick up mobil 1 products.

Absolutely NOT TRUE. Mobil 1 is a type IV pao based synthetic, regardless of "flavor." Many will dispute this, but mobil 1 claims type IV. I called in to a radio show with mobil engineers and they confirmed. Now, as JJ says, several claiming to be synthetic are actually type III. i.e. penzoil platinum. But the thing about penzoil platinum, is that it doing FANTASTIC in engines. Check out bobistheoilguy. Used oil analysis will confirm. Apparently mobil1 will show high iron wear in your engine, but will keep it extremely clean. Penz plat shows low wear numbers across the board. I am switching to it in the spring.
Really though, if you change every 5k, any dino will get you to 200k I believe. If you live in a cold climate, go syn. Also, apparently royal purple sheers rather quickly. I would get it out every 3k. Obviously, this is all opinion....do whatever you want...just keep up with the maintenance...kinda wish I had a crd too...
