Ok so I changed my oil and filter today. Went with Syn Mobil 1 and Fram extended guard filter. Oil change was easy and the filter that dealer had been changing went off real easy. However putting the new filter back on was a pain in stupid. Couldn't do it from the top, lieing on the ground with my arm twisted all over to try to get the angle just right so it would screw on. After about 5 min and my arm starting to cramp...it went on. Still feel better about doing it myself vs. paying some place that pays a kid $6.20 an hour to do it.

Yep, just went with Amsoil 5-30 in my libby yesterday. I was able to get the filter off and on from the top. Had to use a vise grip type filter tool to get the old one off though. Also took some skin off my hands as well. 20min job took all friggin day! At least it's done and I won't have to do it again for some time...

Tell that to the last guy who did the oil change...BUT to be fair, the oil filter does say 3/4 to 1 turn passed contact. Either way it was a real PITA to get it off.

1. No tow package.
2. I am 5' 8".
3. I have popeye forearms
4. The air dam under the front bumper.

It's all about getting it threaded. Once that happens it's easy. I just can't get it started from the top. From the bottom, I run into the air dam (I am thinking about taking it off). It was just a pain with short arms trying to get it started. Everyone says it's not your jeep if you haven't drilled a hole in it. You gotta bleed on it too! Got some of scrapes and scabs this morning from the air dam. I barely tightened the the filter for those of you wondering. Afraid to strip anything.

Trick to get the threads right is to spin it backwards until it clicks into place... then thread forward.

Sorry, I don't mean to be negative here, but fram oil filters are really pretty poor. If you google filter study you will find this out. No problem for now, but next change you might want to go with something a little better, i.e. wix, napa gold, pureone, etc.
Congrats on getting the job done! I am lucky as well, as I can get to the filter from the top. HD cooling would be nice though...

Oops, just reread that you went with the "extended guard" and I am sure those are better than the orange cannisters...

A cup wrench and a ratchet makes quick work of the filter.

I have the bigger shroud too so I cannot even see the filter from the top.

They put the filter in the same place on the Hemi's too.

That's what makes it easy to take off from the top.

That would have been nice. I didn't have a filter removal tool handy so I had to go to princess auto and pick one up after taking the skin off my knuckles. Unfortunately the first one I picked up didn't work that great (rubber strap) and didn't fit in the limited space so I had to go back and get the vise grip style that crushes the filter. It worked but I'm going to look into the cup wrench for future oil changes.

Amsoil among others offer a remote oil filter set up and additonally a additonal Filter. For once I am no exponding on the virtues of AMSOIL but the idea of a remote oil filter is still a great idea. Relocate your oil filter to an easily assesible location and when oil filter replacement comes just reach down and change it from the convenient location you have set up.

I was just looking at the Amsoil oil-precharger for my brother. Same principles as a remote filter except the oil-precharger helps to lube things up before you start the engine. Pretty neat idea. Sure would be nice to have easy access to the oil filter
