Hi. I don't have a Liberty yet but I'm looking at 2 right now. 1st is a 05 Renegade, 33,500 miles nicely equipped and in nice shape, $14,500. The second one is an 06 Sport with 19,800 miles, less equipment but also in very good shape for $14,900

Are there any differences between the 05 and 06 model year that I should choose one over the other? Can you suggest, other than the typical stuff, to look for? It seems like neither of these did any off roading.

Thanks!

Well what are you looking for in your KJ? it seems the 05 has more stuff and is cheaper. Not many differences other then the front ends are different. and the 06 probably has the (ESP) Electronic Stability Program which most people don't like

I like the ESP very well.

Do they have the same transfer case

The selec-trac with full time 4wd is nice.

Does it really matter?
When you buy it, you will start to get a strange feeling when driving the KJ and you will start to think about MODS and FABS that you are going to do.

I would go with the one with less miles on it. Well actually I would go with the nicest one. mechanicaly sound KJ

x2 on the mechanically sound truck. I would consider what you want to do with it. Im assuming that because your on here that you want to use it offroad. Even if its not insane rubicon type stuff. Id go with the libby because you get the skids, lights and fenders for what looks to be not much extra.

which ever one you go forget the VIN prior to buying it and do a recall check on it via chryslers website.Car fax check aint a bad idea either. If both are clean, I would go for the lower milagea KJ and MOD the crap out of it.

Welcome and have fun, we do!

I would say that it depends on how much you like to work on stuff yourself. If you want to go offroading and like to work on your Jeep, then get the Sport. If you like to go offroading and don't like, or know how to work on your Jeep, then get the Renegade because it comes standard with more features that you could use. Just my 2 cents. Oh, and welcome to LOST KJs. You will not find a better community for KJs. O.K. my 3 cents.

Welcome to LOST Shimmy!

The BIGGEST difference, and this is a BIG diffference, is the inculsion of ESP in the 06 model year. The ESP is a love/hate function that helps avoid tire slippage. You can "turn it off," but it's still active (from what I hear). It's a GREAT feature to have on wet pavement. But it's not as fun if you want to do donuts.

I'd have to test drive the ESP and see what I thought about it. I strongly suggest taking both out for extensive test drives before choosing.

As far as I know, there is nothing else difference between the 05 and 06. There are, obviously, a few differences between the Sport and Renegade trim levels though.

Good luck with your purchase!!

Renegade has cooler wheels and cool lights on top of the bumper. Sport has bare plastic flares and bumpers that don't show trail rash as easily. Renegade may or may not have leather, heated seats, and heated mirrors. Sport won't have those, but by god you won't feel as bad about getting into your rig after rolling around in the mud trying to unstuck it if you don't have leather

I don't know much about ESP, but I'd go with the one that has the Selec-trac... which is probably the Renegade.

I'm prolly biased on this one....but I would say the 05 Renny.

Though, I would find out what the Renegade does have in the package besides the wonderful flat hood! Like an EVIC (lights & computer display w/ buttons above the windshield), the factory tow package, sunroof, top 4 spotlight rack, or 4x4? Was it offroad much (dirty engine compartment or mud evidence, larger than 245 size tires, rubbing in the wheel wells?) Also, look in the air intake filter box and the service records.

I still think the 2005's were the best year.

Chris

Hi, Shimmy. Don't know if it's the same on gas models, but on the CRD, the warrany changed drastically between 05 and 06 (05 has a better PT warranty). That's something worth checking if you want to have cheaper operational costs in case anything breaks.
