Willie Nelson has his own company called BioWillie. I was reading this in this months Rolling Stone. He said that he put 100% vegetable oil in a Mercedes and a Jetta and they ran fine! Can you do that with the CRD?

straight veggie oil is a little thick for our injection system(what I've read) but bio-diesel works fine :D

I don't think these cars Willie Nelson put it in were suppose to take 100% either according to the manufacture, but it said he had no problems. Even got better milage.

Are you sure that he is using 100% VEGITABLE OIL? BioWillie is a Biodiesel company, and Biodiesel is diesel fuel that is made from vegitable oil instead of petrolium.

You can use biodiesel in any diesel vehicle made since about 1995.

I have been using at least 20% biodiesel in my Volkswagen for over three years, and 54000 miles. Most of the summers I use 100%.

In my CRD I have used at least 20% biodiesel since purchase, and for the last few tanks 100%, although switching to 50% for the winter...

Be careful when talking biodiesel. You often need to define what you mean by the term. Technically, Biodiesel is vegetable oil that has been through a refining process which adds methanol and lye to remove all the glycerin and other stuff. Vegetable oil (often called VO, StraightVO - virgin oil, or WasteVO - from fryers) congeals at a very high temperature. If you're using WVO and it has an animal fat in it, that will solidify at room temp. Obviously this does terrible things to your fuel pump, fuel filter, and injectors. If you want to run VO (often called a greasecar) you need a separate fuel system to hold the VO. The tank, fuel lines, fuel filter, etc need to be heated (this is often done by running engine coolant around these systems). Of course the coolant isn't warm until the engine is warm so you have to start the motor w/ D2, let it warm up, then switch over. Also before shutting the engine off you need to switch back to D2 so the VO won't clog up the injectors, filter, pump, etc. as the engine cools down. But on the plus side you can just take WVO from restaurants, filter out all the solid bits, and you have fuel. VERY cheap.

Biodiesel on the other hand is much more stable although you still have to be careful if you want to run B100 (100% biodiesel) in colder climates. Depening on the feed stock (soy, canola, etc) the cloud/gel point is different and standard D2 anti-gel additives don't work. So most people don't run B100 below about 40F.

Biodiesel and D2 can be mixed at will and B20 is a popular level where you get some benefits of bio w/o worrying about gelling and such. Personally I've started "splash blending" my CRD. I had a 55-gallon drum of biodiesel delivered last week and I filled the tank w/ 3/4 D2 and topped off w/ B100 so I'm running roughly B25. I'll run this way for a couple tanks then move to B50 and ultimately to B100 by next spring. The place I'm buying from here in the Bay Area charges $3.25/gallon w/ all road taxes paid and delivered in a drum. Considering D2 is $3.39/galon here rt now it's a easy choice. I also like the convenience of having fuel at home in case of an earthquake or whatever.

So biodiesel is a great thing - it might even be cheaper than D2 in your area and it's a hell of a lot better for the environment, not to mention we can grow it here at home and don't need OPEC. Being able to run biodiesel and towing performance were the main resons I bought my CRD. Sorry, my Northern California tree-hugger is coming out :)

For more information, check out the government's biodiesel website: http://www.biodiesel.org/ and http://www.biodieselnow.com

Be ready for some serious hippy-speak, Mother Earth and all that. But it's folks like Willie who are making biodiesel acceptable for regular folks.

Try it out!

I ran biodiesel and straight Veggie oil in my 83 MB and when I sold it last year the car still had orignal injectors and Injecton Pump. The guy who bought is making his own biodiesel from Waste Veggie Oil, I use to add a qt of VO to the tank at every fill up. Last couple of years I just used biodiesel. The diesel engine was designed to run VO when Mr Diesel invented the engine, he did this because the Germans had no source of oil in the country. Well that's a real short version and you should look it up and find out more info about the inventor of this engine we all love so much.

The reason for mfgs not wanting you to use anthing more then B20 is probably due to lessening the impact of loss of revenue to the oil companys. Man I did put that rather politely didn't I? :D

What most of these new to diesel folks don''t realize is the poor quality of fuel here in the US, or how to avoid it when possiable. Biggest two problems are Sulfur & water contamation. Sulfur should be no problem this time next year and is never a problem with bio fuel because it doesn't have any sulfur. Biodiesel only problems are water from improper storage and mfg (home mfg mostly) and bacteria growth. The growth of bacteria & fungus is easly controled by biocides and is no real problem unless no precautions are taken.

Pick up this months Rolling Stone. It's in there. He said BioWillie and he said that he ran 100% veggie oil in his Mercedes without a problem.

I'm getting my girlfriend to type it up for me right now (I'm at work and she's at home). I will post it once I have it ....

Question though. How do you know where to get good diesel fuel? I'm in Colorado. Where do I start to look into getting my own barrel of bio?

More on uncracked veggie oil -

WVO and VO require an INLINE injector pump, found on Isusu, Mecedes, CAT, VW

Wobble plate pumps on the GM 6.2 and 6.5 and 5.7 are not so good but will work,

the common rail setup will not work at all (so I have been told)

Here's a list of "retail" stations in Colorado. These are regular fuel pumps that take credit cards, etc.

http://www.biodiesel.org/buyingbiodiese ... .asp?st=CO

Blue Sun is a large biodiesel provider based in Boulder. They may allow you to buy in bulk: http://www.gobluesun.com/

Some of these people allow bulk purchase: http://www.gobluesun.com/biodiesel_near_you.php

for anyone in South Carolina, there is a BioWille pump off of I-85 just North of Greenville.

VW has used rotery pump for years, and so has MB. They still run fine on VO and many people have used VO on CRD MB's and other makes.

When we were at Willie's place a year ago (Jan. 2009) in Carl's Corner, TX they were out of biodiesel. Kind of disappointing after going out of our way to find some more biodiesel.

I was about to get out my flame-retardant jacket when I noticed the poster is new. All threads are unread when you're new :) More power to WN though. Going from a jail time (drugs) to owning a chain of bio-fuel depots ain't bad for an old guitar slapper.

Just because Willie says so doesn't mean vegetable oil is biodiesel. The pump stuff is ASTM B20, and it's NOT vegetable oil. Nobody should run vegetable oil in a CR diesel unless they know exactly what they are doing and why, and even then any mistake can be costly. There are so many more benefits to biodiesel and so few to VO, I would hope anyone considering a CRD conversion would re-consider.

Theres a place in Austin that has BioWillie B20 stickers on it - haven't made it to Carl's Corner

(and I always wondered what the Bio component was for Bio Willie - it just smells different :) )
