Ok so up at the Mid-Atlantic Fall Crawl, I LOST my idler pulley. The washer bent up and the KJ locked up. I got a new pulley and have got the serpentine belt back on all of the pulley's. My problem is that I cannot seem to get the Idler/Tension pully assembly back into place. There is a groove on the side that the assembly slips into but I cannot seem to line it up and put the configuration together. Any helpful hints or tips? Thanks!

Hey Richard!

Good to meet you over the weekend, and sorry to hear about the problems, if I wasn't so darn tired I would have been there to give a hand (I wussed out around 8:30 and went back to the motel). I had an extra belt and pulleys with me

Not to insult you, but iwas the belt off when you tried to bolt the pulley assemby back on the engine? I had to ask. Mine went on very quick just juggle it a little, and went right in place, reinstall the belt (which is the hard part for me, never seems to line up right.) A breaker bar on the bolt to the outside pulley, I think its the plastic one will relieve the tension and allow you to put the belt on.

Al

The belt was still on when the pulley failed. I got the pulley off and I have the belt lined up. There is a blot between the idler and tention pulley's that you loosen to put the belt on. I cannot seem to get that peice to lign up with the slot for the bolt head in the back. Did I do this whole process wrong Al?

Hey Richard, I think Al was asking if you are trying to put the pully on with the belt attached to the pully or are you putting the pully on by itself.

I have the pulley on now. I simply need to get the belt tight when it is on all of the pulley's.

At least it wasn't something a little more serious and there were people around to help (even if you were suposed to be getting them help). Stupid pulley just one more thing that we have to pay attention to.

The same problem happened to Daniel last year coming back from the Fool's run. Im thinking about finding a set of 9 or 10 lb pulley's to throw on there and not have to worry about them breaking again. Im also getting the stealership to get me a HD Serpentine belt.

Those are some great ideas. Will have to check into this myself, since it is about time to replace a couple of items due to milage.

A quick Google search "Jeep Liberty Pulley Kit" brought up this site:

It states this:

Al, Will this Pulley kit work on the KJ or am I going to have to find a 3.7l kit?

The part number appears correct, and when I looked it up, it said 98 to 03 Jeeps all models. I can sell them for $210 + shipping, however I can't get them out that fast. If you run these pulleys, you will need to get a new belt. These pulleys are smaller than OEM units. I haven't found a part number for the belt yet.

So they should work, I would just put the bottom pulley on, that will free up some ponies all by itself.

NAPA has the individual pulleys for around $25 each, and the entire system for $70. To get the belt on follow the belt looping on the radiator support. You will need to relieve the tension in the unit by lifting upwards on the one pulley.

Ok, I got the whole setup back on. If I do this setup, it will give me more ponies out of the 3.7. Are there any drawbacks to it as in strength over OEM?

So if I get this pulley kit, and it does pull more Hp from the engine, will getting the whole kit work better for the Hp as well as having a stronger underdrive kit? What will happen with the stock pulley's using the smaller belt? Thanks sooo much Al!

With the stock pulleys there is a parasidic (sp) lost of power. The underdrive pulleys essentially slow the things they down, thus they use less HP to turn (or some BS story to effect). When in my mid life crisis mode I put a set of the pulleys on my 99 eclipse spyder. By the seat of the pants-- the acceleration and HP increased. Some pulley manufacturers say around 15 hp gain, but I think its more like 5 to 10 tops.

Now what happens when we put these drag racing pulleys on our Jeeps.

1. The water pump slows down allowing the water to "sit" in the radiator longer. More cooling effect? It may overheat, since the water isn't moving out of the block faster enough. I think the jury is out on that one.

2. At crawling sppeds the battery may not charge. The alt. is spinning slower. We need to know what RPM the alt. starts to charge.

3. variable type power steering may not work correctly, although I don't know if our Libertys come with that type of P/S.

4. You should get more HP and the seat of the pants acceleration should increase.

I am thinking about trying the crank pulley only to see what happens. The underdrive pulleys are smaller in dia., thats why you need a shorter belt.

Okay, one more Fall Crawl damage report.

Apparently one of those rocks that jumped and bit my Jeep smacked the exhaust pipe enough to push it against the transmission pan. (Yes, I know, I need a skid there). Well, beyond that, a couple of the rock's buddies put a dent in right catalytic converter and used my muffler as a punching bag. Needless to say, the muffler and all the piping needs to be replace from the cat back.

I went to Meineke to get an idea of the damage.
The guy there wants to put a dual in dual out muffler in and fix all the piping. I have no problems with that, better flow and everything.
He'll put in a Flow Master 50 series, probably like this one:

and replace all the piping and add tail pipes (nothing fancy, since there isn't anything fancy there in the first place), but not that catalytic converter (it's only dented on the edge). He said he also do a free diagnostic as to determine if the check engine light can be turned off without a trip to the dealer.

His quote from the garage floor looking up at my mangled exhaust system was $500, which includes 3 hours of labor. These seems a little steep to me because the muffler is only $160. I need to get this fixed ASAP and I can't really drive around town and compare quotes. And I can't install it myself.

Any suggestions?

If the system is all stainless stell the $500 is a good deal. I would opt for a 2.5 inch dia. single instead of the two 2(?) inch dia pipes. Those two pipes take up a lot of area, and will be hard to snake them around the gas tank. And if the guy mounts them in a dual outlet one on each side like the Borla system you will leave it on the trail, or hanging on a car door

If you want some more noise like mine, I have the Hushpower stainless on mine. The hushpower is smaller than the regular flowmasters making it a harder target for those easr coast jumping rocks we all encounter. The hushpower, free flow magnaflow cat, and the stainless 2.5 inch tail pipe cost me around $500.

Well, after going to a closer Meineke shop I got the better low down.

$160 for labor
$160 for the single in and out Series 60 muffler
$20 x all the pipes to replace between the headers to the cat, the cat to the muffler and the joiner between the cats. Hopefully the cat is okay, he's going to check on that when they take it down.
$80 for diagnostic, but if the muffler is the problem, I get that back.

Total came out to around $460.
He also noticed that I needed my rear brake pads replaced, which at 43k miles and trail miles, is probably true.

So, I'll be taking it in the morning to the closer shop.
The first guy didn't even give me a print out of the break down like the second guy did.

I can't wait for something to be shipped to me, I've already driven too much with the exhaust pipe against the transmission pan.

It's in the shop right now getting fixed.

Okay, so Meineke has done something to my Jeep.

They are telling me that it is throwing a new code everytime they turn it on.
They say that the engine is getting "flooded", that it is "dumping gas into the system".

I went to pick it up yesterday and basically it turns over and then stalls out.

They are going to flat bed it to a Jeep dealer today to see if they can figure out what is wrong.

Has anyone experienced this before?
My friend John says they screwed up the fuel injection cleaning, but Meineke is claiming that they rules that issue out.

Aaarggggh!!!!

If ran when it went in but not when it comes out, THEY did somethime to the Jeep. They prob. didn't do it on purpose, it just happens sometimes, but they should make it right on their dime.
