Looking for winter tires

I'm looking for some good winter tires. The MTRs are nice for deep snow, but most of the roads around here get plowed at 6am, so I need something that has a lot of siping and does will in lots of slush/moisture/hardpack as well as the occasional snow drift. Right now I think my best bet is the BFG commercial TA traction, it has a severe weather rating and looks to be pretty beefy.

I need something in a 245/75/r16. Anyone know of any other pretty meaty but good winter conditions tires? Thanks in advance for any help/information.

Nokians. they have several tires you might want...their flat out killer snow, their AT, or the WR. check out their site for all the specifics...they jut might be the world's BEST snow/all around weather tires.

I have the Vatiiva ATs, big beefy square shoulder, deep treads, more siping than ANY tire out, and goes 100% through the treads. Cannot find a better all weather AT. I hear their snow treads are just insanely good...some are rated for 118 mph in snow environments.

Don't let the MSRP fool you either....they can be had pretty cheap, its just that they are new to the US (in the early 90's) so they are not a household name yet...YET!

I ran the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revos (235/70R16) for 49,000 miles. Excellent all around tire, great in the snow and rain. Put up with, but did not like the noise though....

The Bridgestone Revo A/T's, their less expensive cousin the Firestone Destination A/T and their much cheaper cousin the Fusion XTI A/T can be found reasonably priced with decent FedEx shipping charges at http://www.roadwaywholesaletire.com

Just ordered a set of the Revos, cause out of the 3 cousins, they seem to have the most aggresive tread pattern and siping. A bit more expensive of the three but also the most positive reviews.

2nd the Nokians. I have the Hakk SUVs with studs, strongly recommend them. Another really good tire for winter conditions is the Bridgestone Blizzak DM-Z3, available in that size.

Consumers Report rated the above winter tire as No 1 in their last review. They are very good and even quiet as my all seasons.

I also run the GY Fortera Tripletreads which has the snowflake symbol (Canadian govt approved for winter conditions) but they do harden up as the weather temp drops... problem w/ all all seasons that is why it is best to run dedicated winter tires if you are in a snow belt.

I just got a set of Michelin X-Ice on my CRD. Quiet, ride smooth, nice tires. No snow yet, but we've had a horrendous rain storm here (mudslides, roads out, etc...) I have been amazed at how well these tires cut through standing water. No hydroplaning at all.

Folks who recommend AT tires for snow might want to consider that snow tires use a different compound than all-seasons, MT's,or AT's. When the hard rubber of AT tires is exposed to sub-freezing temps, they get even harder, meaning they have less grip. Agressive sidewall tread and big voids for throwing snow can help get traction to go, but they don't help you stop or turn. Siping helps a bit.

True winter tires use a much softer compound, for getting a better grip in cold conditions, and usually feature a crazy amount of siping (and studs in some cases). Downside is they don't last long when used at warm temps.

I looked for Nokians first, but since I need studless, I was a bit screwed. The local shops only had their aill-season tires and their studded snows.

That seems odd to me, because they don't come from the factory studded: it's the tire shops themselves that stud them. Maybe your tire shop just studded them all as they came in the door? Oh, well, who knows. Anyhow, let us know how you like your Michelins!

For what it is worth, I have General Grabber AT2s and love them in the snow and on ice so far. I wanted good all year round tires. For strictly winter tires I have heard the best are Nokian tires though, check out their site and read reviews on tirerack.com.

Check out the good year wrangler silent armors! I think they are rated like the 3rd best or something like that on one of those tire sites. The kevlar material that is used on the tires really grips. The wear has been good also, ive had mine for about 20000kms so far.
