well duckey, the Edmunds article Joel linked earlier does mention it is wider... I do not think they will get rid of the short/standard Jeep. I think the long is for a more versatile option, or just more choices fro consumers... Now I wish they would leave the TJ alone, but if a scrambler is coming back that would be cool...

I read elsewhere that the extra 6" of width will allow for an optional 33" tire package. Also, there might be an optional winch bumper (probably that massive battering ram we see in the pictures). They're keeping the electronic locking differentials, solid axles, etc. This might not be so bad. Let's wait and see. I also heard that the modular sections for the new hard top will store behind the rear seat. Of course this is all stuff that was heard from a friend of a friend of somebody that knows something about something or other...

I don't really understand the big deal about the new modular top. I guess I understand the purist stand point a little, but I think it will actually be for the best. This way you can remove all the panels (roof, sides, lift gate) and have a practically topless vehicle without having to worry about fiting it into the gargage and being such a pain to put back on. Now, all you need is a way to store the removable panels on the Jeep and then you could go wheeling topless and when it start to rain or get cold then put the top back on. This thread reminds me of all the XJ people bashing the KJ when it first was introduced. Plus how can you complain when it will still be SFA and come w/ an option for 33s standard.

Dear Lord please don't let it have square headlights. Please, Please, Please.

If you can store the removable panels in/on the Jeep (maybe even if you can't), and if it's got a SFA, 4WD, and can be had with 33's, and 4 doors, whether it's the 3.7L or the CRD, I'll be putting one of our Libby's up for sale (probably the wife's, cause she likes the sunroof in my RME..... ), and buying one, provided it will also have a 5K tow rating package, and they don't go with square headlights... I HATE square headlights... note that I've owned two CJ's, one TJ, and now the Libby, but NEVER a YJ.... no offense to the YJ crowd as I know they're competent 4 wheelers like every other Jeep Wrangler out there, but I HATE the look of the square headlights on them.

Luis

ps. Did I mention that I hate the square headlight look on a Wrangler?

as for the yj...dont forget the crappy tranny and tiny u joints. oh and the d35c. oh and the lack of air conditioning. oh and the flimsy skid plates. oh and...

seriously, anyone ever seen the factory air conditioning "add on" for a yj? keeps one knee extremely cold :D

LEAVE THE TJ ALONE!!!!

If it aint broke, don't break it!!!!

D/C ruined the CJ by going to the YJ, how about we leave it alone. Are TJ sales so low that a redesign is really necessary?

This is as bad as changes on an EPR!!! Why must things always be changed for no reason more than the sake of change.

sorry for the rant, but really why do we need a redesign every 2-3-4 years?

There are military evaluation versions of the TJL (Unlimited) in existance with the CRD motor. So maybe the Wrangler will appear in diesel form, especially as it would really boost sales in Europe, where gas priced are double what you guys pay.

You build that, with a CRD, and I'm going to be hard pressed not to buy one! That is an awsome looking machine. It's like a mini Rescue..

Did this type of thing happen when they were designing/testing the KJ? Like a product leak or something?

I would be curious if this happened but i suspect that it didnt have as much interest as a new TJ would???

I specifically remember when the KJ was "spied" like this. They were testing it at the Rubicon Trail and some spy photographers snapped some photos and the next thing you know it's in major magazines. Those spy photos were a huge relief because the KJ was going to be the first IFS Jeep in history or something like that and people were worried that it was going to be a mall cruiser. When those spy photos of the KJ at the Rubicon Trail hit the magazines, Jeep enthusiasts all over the country went "Wheewwww...". What a sigh of relief.

Same thing with this new TJ...it's great to see that it still has a solid axle front end and is sticking to it's roots.
