I have a 245/75-16 General Grabber AT2 back there on a Rubicon wheel...the tire is 48 lbs and the wheel is probably 10-15.....so, is that too heavy? Will I eventually have door problems??

I've never heard of anyone with problems from that nor did I experience any. The only thing that will mess up your door is if someone rear ends you or you nail a ledge/rock when four-wheeling (what I did). But either of those could happen with any tire/wheel combo.

It just seems to me that that weight constantly bouncing up and down several inches away has to stress those hinges....

Anyone else heard/know of anything?

They're pretty beefy hinges. I hit my spare twice on a couple of ledges and the actual tail gate door became twisted (not a lot, but enough to cause trouble). Hinges are still fine.

I just mounted my new rims and tires today, decided to pull the spare carrier off the rear door. I had a LARGE crease in the metal at the bottom mounting bracket. My previous rims were Moabs with 245/75s. I've never been in an accident, the only thing that could have ruined the sheet metal is the weight of that tire, and the opening and closing of the rear door.

I would be concerned with mounting anything heavier than the stock size for an extended period of time.

are you sure no one has ever bumped your KJ when you weren't around? that would be the exact crease if someone hit it when parking.

Yep pretty sure, pretty an@l retentive of where I park in a parking lot, at home its in the garage, and my own parking spot at work (backed in). I ran the Moabs for about a month and a half, when I switched to them I had the carrier off and there was no crease in the sheet metal then.

wow.....1 for 1. Any other chimes in?

I can see both the weight and some careless SUV driver backing into your tire as possible causes.

There is no way the mount is just secured to sheet metal is there?? They would bolt it to the door frame, right?

I weigh 210# and have stood on my spare countless times (with the door closed) and I don't see/have any issues. My wife just told me that my grabbers (235/70/16) arrived at the house today, so I will be having them installed on saturday.... I have heard that the rear tire rack can support 100# without any problems.

Just sharing my experience. I've read a few other accounts of the carrier not being able to support the weight of an oversized rear on this board, not sure if their problem was the sheet metal or with the hinges sagging. Hopefully I'm a fluke, I'm contacting the dealership tomorrow to see if I can get it covered under warranty. I won't necessarily advertise that there was a larger spare on there...

The Moab rim weighs right at 22lbs.

48lbs is a heck of alot for a tire. My 245/70/16 Yoko A/T-S only weighs 36lbs.

The MT/r is a little bit bigger tire. It's also a 10 ply tire, vice your 6 ply Geolandars, thats a lot of weight also.

My owners manual list the max wieght on the spare holder is 50lbs,my rear swing gate started to sag bad with my 85+lbs spare only after a few months,so I moved it to the roof till I got my RL tire carrier.

Thats weird that the manual lists that. My stock SRAs were 32lbs, plus the the wheel. I can't imagine that the stock wheels are more than 5lbs lighter than the MOABs (steel wheels would be much heavier though). Say if they weigh 18lbs that's the max weight right there. Not to mention other stuff that can be added from the list of mopar goodies. Figure a bike rack with two bikes on there would exceed the max weight for sure. I could see the tailgate sagging after years of hard wheeling with a heavy tire on there but I think any ripples in the sheet metal would have to be a defect or someone hitting the vehicle.

245/75-16 MT/Rs are 50lbs, not much more than the AT2s. I can't really use my tailgate as a reference because it's bent so much the lower inner support is crumpled.

My tire is now on my roof rack. I plan to put it on a rear tire carrier someday when I can afford the bumper and tire carrier to put it on.

MOAB's are way heavier then the OEM KJ rims, from being a 1" wider and being thicker(ment for offroad abuse),I believe the OEM limited alloy rims are about 12-14lbs apiece.I know my OEM tires and rims hit the scales at 48lbs apiece when I swapped them for 245/75 MT/R's before I left the dealer lot.The rear gate tire holder can hold more but after time and all the bumps will sag it with a heavy tire and rim.No way my factory tire carrier would hold my 35" tires going on my KJ soon(about 100-110lbs apiece).

I have had a steel wheel and 31" tire on my spare for 2 months now and no problems yet. I would guess the weight to be somewhere in the 50 to 60pd range.

maybe I am just expectin problems, but there is no doubt about it....with the door closed, the top part of the door is ever so slightly wider than the bottom part of the same section, which would indicate sag. Same on the opposite side.
