Yea, my stock wheels weigh right at 50lbs too.

Tirerack says my stock HP's weigh 30lbs so I figured the stock rims weigh 20lbs. Mine are 17in rims though so they probably weigh more than the stock 16" rims.

when I sold my stock 16 inch wheels and 1/2 tread Destination ATs they were at 42/44 lb to ship. Never weighed the MTRs and Moabs but have had one hanging off the rear for a while now and no problems so far. Would not be much difference in 16 / 17 inch wheel maybe a lb or so

Mine are tipping the scales at 71 lbs.

I have a LT235/85/R16 on my stock alloy rim with my carrier shimmed out about 3/8" or more and haven't had a problem, tire rests on radius built in the bumper which helps support it. Joe 8)

yup, 50lb limit is what the manual says. I had a college friend who had a '90 somthing wrangler lifted with VERY stiff shocks and 33's on it. We noticed his stock tire mount had actually started to crack the upper left sheet metal around the bolt. Sure it's a different rig but I'm just saying.

I'm not getting a bike rack or snowbaord rack mounted on the rear tire for that very reason (going to install a hitch and bike/board rack to that some time this winter.) I'm sure the actual weight on the spare mount while it's parked is no big deal but when you factor in the forces of the very back of the car bouncing slowly up and down over time that can't be good. If you offroad or drive in cities with lots of large pot holes that's got to be even worse.

Shot I took earlier today, you can see the indentations on the right side of the mounting area. Look close and you may be able to see th crease running up from the bottom to the top mounting holes, and the paint beginning to chip near the bottom.

I'm not sure if it's the picture, but it looks like the marks are only on the right side?

Did you buy your libby new?

Could you have inadvertently opened your trunk lid into something, or am I not seeing the other two marks on the left side?
Just food for thought.

Bought the Libby used April of this year. As I said in my earlier post, I had the carrier off a few months ago, for a good cleaning, when I switched to Moabs and MT/R's, when it was off, there were no indentations, marks, chips, or creases then. This happened after I stepped up from the light weight stocker to the Heavy Moab/MT combo. The damage is only on the right side. I'm assuming that the rear door repeatedly opening and closing (several times a day) with the added weight, the momentum of the tire pushed in more on one side than the other (because of direction of travel). If the hinges were on the other other side and the door opened right instead of left, I would expect the marks to be on the left side vice right.

Interesting picture and I think your right. Has anyone ever had the inside covering off the door? I wonder if there is any way to weld any reinforcing to the mount.

Here is the inside. But, I can't tell if there is enough room for bracing.

What was said about the dents being caused from the gate being closed repeatedly does make sense (with a heavy wheel/tire on it) but maybe it’s simpler than that. After you took it off is it possible that when you put everything back on you just locked down the bolts on the right side a little too tight and that is what caused the dents? It just seems like the dents are too perfectly square right where the mounts are. I would think a gradual dent would be a larger shape but a focused force like the bolts being too tight would cause the spare tire mount to make an imprint in the sheet metal much like “stamping” the metal does.

Last time I pulled the carrier off, I didn't remore the back brackets (the 2 straight strips on tops and bottom) just the 4 nuts to pull the carrier off and wash behind it. When I did it this time is when I noticed the crease running top to bottom, so I pulled the back brackets too to see the extent of the damage. The two square dents you are seeing is the outline of the edges of those barckets.
