The outside diameter will be a problem for CRD's the steel collar barely fits - gassers have more room

Well, I guess I'll be the guinea pig for the gasser crew with a Stafford one and see if it fits (assuming the price quote I get back is realistic).

I hear the concerns about dissimilar metals but shouldn't the steel really be preferable over the aluminium?

What are anybody's thoughts on the stainless?

stainless is expensive, but its also very strong and wont corrode.

If you live in the rust belt - 2 dissimilar metals will form a galvanic cell and corrode one
(I don't have my Materials handbook here or I'd tell you which one)

It needs something to allow the ions to be mobile - which normally means water and salt.

From Stafford Manfacturing

They have a 3-9/16" Bore, 7/8" Width, use 3/8"-24 bolts, but have an OD that is 5" (the McMaster is 4-3/ 4" OD)

Steel

Aluminum

Stainless

Is the extra 1/4" outside diameter going to be a probelm?

I have requested a price quote on these.

:D

Stafford does not sell directly to the public, however, they do sell to distributors who do. The ONLY online seller I have found who sells the "proper size" (3-9/16 bore, 7/8" width, 5" diameter) which "may" work on the gassers is KAMANDIRECT.com:

Steel (#8L309) $75.06

Aluminum (#8A309) $84.23

Stainless (#8S309) $150.13

All prices are before shipping. Still, it has to be cheaper than $40 plus $80 machining...

I coated mine with a couple of coats high temp black rattle can paint. I'm going to upgrade my diffs in early March, I'll be able to tell then if there was any corrosion problems. Give it a couple of months in the salt and snow of Northern IL could be classified as a good test.

I'll keep you posted.

That's why folks went with the Aluminum collar instead of steel - eliminates the cell. The gasser has more space to the crossmember so the Aluminum will fit - the CRD doesn't have as much space but the steel will fit but it's tight.

however Paint, tape - anything that insulates - the only problem is that you have to enlarge the opening enough for whatever you put there.
