I don't see why a mechanic would do that. He would have to purposely unhook the wiring harness from the glow plugs and feed it 12 v directly from the battery. He will be bypassing the glow plug relay and control module.

The battery is 12V. Hence you'll let the smoke out of them.

I don't see why they would do it either, esp. in direct violation of that warning and the FSM. Maybe it was an old technique in years gone by. Anyway, I wasn't the one who suggested the mechanics did do it, but the situation sounds fishy. My money is on them spraying some type of volatile cleaner into the intake.

Well friends, this chapter is at a close. I finally picked it up today. The one glow plug had a split tip, but there was nothing to show that they had actually done it. I did get a little bugged when the bill was $160 more than I had expected, but they redid their math and came up with a lower number that was more in line with what I had expected. I regret losing my patience at a couple points, but standing my ground ultimately paid off.

I did learn a few lessons from it though:

1.The extended warranty people are likely to try to blame any problem they can on you, don't make it too easy for them to do so.
2. Never take your CRD into the shop with any non-OEM stuff visible under the hood. (see lesson 1)
3. If you run Biodiesel (even commercially available mixes) in your rig, don't advertise the fact by putting a sweet-looking BIODIESEL badge on your tailgate. The extended warranty inspector tried to take a sample from my fuel tank so that they could try to void my warranty. Kudos to my service writer for having my back and not letting them take a sample. (See lesson 1 again)
4. If you think the extended warranty company is trying to screw you, they probably are. Stand your ground. (see a pattern here?)
5. To summarize: THE EXTENDED WARRANTY IS NOT WORTH THE HASSLE!

I know now that I am a knucklehead for shelling out for the extended warranty. But we got it thinking that our CRD would be a long-term vehicle. Heck, it used to be that a diesel (or a Jeep for that matter) was built to last. We also wanted to be covered since it was the first year for this engine in the US. But this vehicle has been a complete disappointment. Jeep orphaned it after only 2 years, parts are way overpriced and difficult to obtain. (one week wait to get 2 glow plugs?)

Add to that the feeling of holding my breath to see if the CEL comes on every time I start it, plus diesel that costs $0.50 more a gallon than RUG, and I have had it. I spent last weekend test-driving vehicles, this weekend the Jeep is gone, hopefully.

Thanks for all of the shared knowledge and support, it is the one thing that kept me on a somewhat level playing field with the dealership thru this whole experience.

Keep an eye out for my posting in the for sale board in the near future. Anyone interested in a slightly used Provent filter?

oz,
Was your extended warranty Chrysler or 3rd party?

Third party, although we bought it at the same time we signed for the Jeep. I guess it is a way for Jeep to divest themselves of responsibility for the runaround that ensues as soon as you try to use the warranty.

Hi oz,

I'm really sorry to hear about your experiences. I had an aftermarket warranty on my 95 BMW M3. I did a little better than breaking even with it, but it was a hassle at times and one of the repairs (seat heating elements) was denied because I did not call to get approval first before having it fixed. (I called them while the repair was being done, and made the mistake of telling them it was already in the shop).

For the CRD, I bought the Chrysler Max-Care warranty. Today we are using it for the first time to have a ripped intercooler hose replaced. I asked the service manager how it worked, and was basically told "It's just like your factory warranty, except you pay your deductible when you pick up the vehicle". It was a little more expensive than going aftermarket, but it's worth it for the reduced hassle and risk.

- Chris

Sorry to hear you are not satisfied with the CRD.

I think your problem is that diesel isn't as common in the US as in europe. We would have those parts over night and the mechs would be used to working in diesel engines too.

What have your decided on buying instead?

We just got back from test driving a Subaru Forester, and the wife and I both liked it a lot. It doesn't create the illusion of "I could go offroading if I had somewhere to do it" like the Jeep does. But living in the middle of Urban Sprawl, Kansas, that really isn't an option anyways. The Forester is all-wheel drive, gets 25+mpg hwy, and doesn't run on expensive diesel. Plus I should be able to buy parts somewhere other than the dealership, who doesn't carry parts for it anyways.

You are correct that diesel SUV's are an oddity over here. The dealership where we want to trade it took 45 minutes to call around and even figure out if it was something they could resell. They had never even heard of a CRD before.

Hello,

Can you please give me some specifics on the jeep--options etc, and how much you would want for it. Thanks.. I tried to send you a PM, but I don't think it went through.

I didn't mean to give anyone the impression that I was putting the CRD on the for sale board. I mentioned the ProVent, that is all I was thinking of, maybe the set of wheel locks or something.
I really just wanted to get rid of it ASAP and move on. Sorry if I gave anyone the wrong impression or got their hopes up.
Maybe the next owner will enjoy it as much as I did during the good times, but my tolerance for dealing with Jeep and the 3rd party warranty was at an end...

Again, apologies to those who hoped to buy the CRD direct from me. I also know this thread has been all over the place.

So for those interested in the end of the story, here it is. This is the body of a PM response I sent to a board user last night; hopefully I have given him a fair head start!

Sorry, I didn't check the message board when I got home last night, and we hit the ground running as soon as we woke up this morning.

It was a 2005 Sport model, Deep Beryl Green. I say "was", because I just sold it to CarMax in Merriam KS. The dealer I wanted to buy a used Subaru Forester from had offered me 12,500 for it, but admitted they would take it to auction, and that they would buy it, but hesitated since it might be hard for them to move. They are a small used lot attached to a large Toyota dealership where we just bought my wife's Toyota Yaris 6 months ago. So they don't want to carry a lot of overstock. The salesman asked if I had tried CarMax, since they can move cars around and have a better chance of selling them.

I went up to CarMax after dinner last (Friday) night. They were great to deal with, very professional. The best part, they came back with an offer almost equal to what I owed on it! We went back up this morning, sold it, and went to the other dealer to buy the Forester. All in all, a very painless process.

I ran into the salesman I dealt with last night at CarMax again this (Saturday) morning, he said they would be selling my CRD from their store. He also predicted that it might sell within a week of going on sale. So if you want to get dibs on it, try calling them. If it helps, the last 8 of the VIN is 5W583153

If you call, ask them to save the homemade transmission skid plate for ya. It is made out of 1/4" aluminum diamond plate. Surprisingly the aluminum is stiff as heck and it has done a good job of keeping road debris from denutting the oil filter for the time I have had it. I left it on, just because I didn't want to give Murphy's Law the chance of throwing some crap at me on the last drive I would make in it!

PS: Please do not PM me and ask what they gave me for it. They were great to deal with, and I don't want to blow that if I ever need to deal with them in the future. I will only say that it was enough for me to break even on the payoff, and they bettered the offer mentioned above by an amount that made it completely painless to sell it to them.

Just got our 's back today after a week. Had a CEL come on and took it to dealer. #2 glowplug was bad. 1 hour labor. CEL back on  , still #2 glowplug bad according to code. Long story short, this is not a TSB yet but is on their help line; Check glowplug wiring harness connections. Make sure connectors are on the right glowplug. Possible # 2 and 3 and 1 and 4 could be crossed. Ours ended up being the # 3 glowplug instead of the #2 that the code was throwing. Good luck. :D

Welcome Wyokaboy, Glad to see a new contributor. I think a few people have had issues with the glow plugs hooked up wrong. I'm surprised that the wires aren't marked better.

The stealership is allowed to charge Chrysler 0.3 hours for a warranty replacement of one or all glow plugs.

I've had words with a few service managers about their practice of charging more time to retail (me) customers for standard service procedures.

Well there's something fishy here, the paperwork they gave me stated 3 hours, they had the car for the entire day and even provided a rental. Now how did they cover the cost of this if they can only submit an 0.3hr claim to Chrysler?
