I saw a friend of mine standing outside a bar talking to a couple of guys tonight. He knew I was taking some beach pics of the KJ and I had one of them with me so I thought I would show him. The other 2 guys had Wranglers. Well, when they saw the KJ they said : Where is the Jeep"? "That ain't no Jeep!" So I gave them a challenge: you take your Wranglers back to 100% stock and I'll go anywhere you go! Their response "That ain't fair, your not stock" Yes I am, 100% stock. Put up or shut up! They walked away!

hahaha thats great! i love wranglers. i used to have one, 89 sahara YJ. but can admit wrangler owners can be cocky and think if a jeep is not a wrangler then its not a real jeep, i just ignore them! :) not ssying all wrangler owners are like that, but you know what i mean haha. same witha lot of my friends with big pickup trucks dont care for jeeps in general. they always say stuff like, does it burn when you pee and stuff like that lol

It's happened to me, too. The guys at work all drive fullsize chevy trucks so I get a lot of crap 'till I tell them "lets see you go where I can" and they pretty much shut up. Ive got a buddy who owned a couple of Cherokees and he kept on with the "it isnt a real jeep, real jeeps dont have IFS, it looks too cute, its not capable", that is until I actually took him offroad, then I got some respect. Showing people pics on this site of the built up KJ's doing some hardcore wheeling helps too.

Nobody has said anything but I got to thinking. I'm NOT saying all Wrangler people are stupid. Those 2 were! Figured I should make that clear.

Had it been me I would have taken that challenge
I found my self and my wife going head to head on our first Jeep Jamboree
My BONE SHOW ROOM STOCK TJ and her KJ ,same stock both on AT's
she ended up parking and riding in the TJ because the KJ kept getting high centered
now here we are 3 years later and SEVERAL mods to the TJ but only a few to the KJ and still it will not happen
Fact is the KJ was never built to follow a TJ
lift them both the same ,run the same size tire and still the TJ will go way more places then any KJ
lock them both and still the TJ comes out on top
you would have to further mod your KJ to follow a TJ
it is like comparing apples to oranges

The Wrangler owners in the Facebook Jeep group are the cockiest, most ignorant bunch I have ever seen. The KJ is just now starting to gain the respect of those guys--one of them admitted that the KJ is the second most capable vehicle in the current Jeep line-up (dur, dur, durrr)... I guess we gotta start somewhere.

The Wrangler owners back in Kansas were a good group of guys. When school let out on a snowy day, all the guys with Jeeps would go to the back parking lot to mess around in the snow, and they didn't hesitate to wave at me because I was out having fun just like they were.

I had a completely different experience than yours today. Went out a huge house being completely redone to punch down some Cat5 cables. When I went back out to my Jeep, there were multiple construction workers admiring it and asking questions.

unless of course your following the TJ to move yourself from home to college.... then you'd have to follow the TJ 2 or 3 times round trip and into gas stations more frequently....when the kJ will make it in one trip and one tank of fuel.. and if not it can pull a heavier trailer behind it  .. like comparing apples to oranges your completely right. Both have they're up's and down's

pull a heavy load YES
but the fuel milage is not that great
KJ = 20 highway
TJ = 17 highway
thing is the TJ get's 16-17 with 31X11.5 Bias ply LTB's and the KJ gets 20 on 245/75 MTR's

my dad's stock 06 6 speed rubi gets 14-15 mpg.. and my renny 6 speed stock got 21-22 (now only gets 15-16). and a CRD gets better than mine did stock... so not much better but over a 200 mile trip the rubicon can only go 10 more miles untill completely empty with it's 15 gallon fuel tank .. and the KJ still has 210 miles to empty with a 20 gallon fuel tank and an extra 5mpg... still.. not comparing apples to oranges but i'm just clarifying :) to each his own

all wrangler people i've encountered were friendly.. but def. doubted the KJ's offroad capabilities.. but after wheeling with them for the day they respect it much more.. and are still nice people!... it's a jeep thing what can i say! i think a stock KJ can go everywhere a stock TJ can... as long as it has skids (it will need them).. and a good driver.

Isn't that what we're all here for?

We build our KJ's to tackle the trails our TJ/JK brethren believe we could never attempt...

Not to mention, like KYLiberty brought up, we get the looks and compliments because we modify Jeeps many never would have thought could look so good. I think everyone can admit, the KJs look mean when they are all done up.

And BTW...I'm nowhere near 20 MPG highway...I wish...

Last July, I entered a 4x competition where I was competing against TJ's, YJ's, Zuk's, Taco's... you name it. All in the "stock" class (31" or smaller tires, no diff. mods, 3" or less lift) and the only two who managed to come out on top of my KJ were completely stock TJs (one with a very experienced driver, the other had limited slip). Really made me wish I had lsd but it also made me realize that, with just one locker, I could go ANY place that ANY Wrangler, that was still close to being stock, could go. Don't let anyone tell you that your KJ can't hang 'cuz I know for a fact that it can, with only minor modifications at most. And a month before that competition, I went places that TJs, YJs, even WJs were getting hung up and breaking t-cases. Jeep on! :D

I have both
2002 with 2.5 Lift 265/75/16 cooper tires and have done a lot of mods to the finder wales
2006 unlimited with 2"bb and 33x12.50x 15 pro comp mt and there is no way that my Liberty will do half as much as the LJ its heaver and will get stuck in mud easier, cant flex as much front axles are different and liberty rides better . its like saying my Cessna 150 will get me there just as a Lear jet can. My liberty will hold it on but its not the same.

KJs, suck off-road from my Experience, it does go some places i thought it wouldn't. its far to low to the ground and seems to get hung up often

For off-road get a Wrangler or similar (although the JK's are Huge)

for road and mild off-road, liberties are fine.

Off-roading is very subjective.

Last fall Eddo & I went on the same trip. His lifted/locked/mtr'd KJ walked through most everything, making his day kinda ho-hum. My open-diffed/bone stock/sucky sr-a'd KJ had a blast in with the other stock & near stockers, and went everywhere anyone else did.

Had I been in my ( R.I.P.) D44'd/front & rear spooled Commando, those trails would not have been as fun. Had I been in my current cut up Cherokee ( the real kind with a frame ) with the 33" Interco M/T's, those trails would not have been as fun. But I had a great day in the jeep I used. ( Except for worrying about the front diff.)

Regular Wranglers are cool on trails here due to being narrow. But in many cases the wheel base is too short. Build you a CJ6 ( 101" or 104"), CJ8 (104"), or Commando ( 101" or 104") or an LJ and get the best of both worlds. IMHO.

While my KJ is not a Wrangler, I have yet to get a Rav4, CR-V, Vue, Forester, Vitara, or Sante Fe to go wheeling with me. It is the best of its class.

I have owned many jeeps two of them tj's they have always been my daily drivers and ill tell you what when it comes to getting in something that is as nice to drive and as comfertable as a kj compared to the tj and almost as capable off road I would go the kj route every time. If all your after is a rock krawler than a wrangler is the best I would not trade my CRD for the world problems and all.

Yep we cop crap simply for having a KJ, TJ's give a lot of crap but I've found the XJ owners seem to give a little more. Perhaps it's KJ envy or just the fact that the XJ just stopped production & the KJ was born. Now they hang onto there XJ's sling crap as us KJ's & complaing about how the new JK isn't any better than the XJ  There is no pleasing some people, I'd like to think that "It's a Jeep thing" was for all Jeeps not just SFA. Oh well, I'm simply glad I'm LOST :D

darn, didn't mean to stir up a hornet's nest here guys. You have to know the terrain here to understand my challenge. It is as flat as pancakes! We have swampy areas and a lot of good trails. In this area I can hang with them, no problem. South of here we have rocks and hills with some tuff going. As far as stock ground clearance goes, in 2005 when I got the KJ the Wrangler had 1" LESS ground clearance. That was according to the Jeep people themselves.

My daughter has a TJ. It's lifted, a little, with 31" tires on it. Looks good. I hate it. Her and the wife take the KJ when they go shopping and leave the TJ for me. The TJ's ride, steering suck as well as all the wind noise. But she loves it and that is all that counts!
