The trick would be to make metal fenders with DOM tubing on the outside that connected to the sliders (at least on the front)

There'd be all kinds of cosmetic things you'd have to hid with this configuration ... once the flare is removed the metal underneath is exposed and there are quite a lot of grooves in that area that would just look odd.

That's what I was wondering about. I haven't had the guts to take mine apart (I'm not a mechanic) but I've seen some great work on this forum and thought if I threw out an idea, one of the fab guys here might have an idea of how to make it work.

ive been working on an extension to go behind the stock flares. AN have also been drawing out 2 different options for steel ones. I hant gotten a chance to rip off the ones one there but i plan on actually being able to use the rivits on then an not just use them for show. I was planning on using a simple on off system so that if you wanted to take them off for the trail you could. im at kind of a standstill with the metal flares because of the weight on the quarter pannels. The first thing i see happening is that you hit something and the sheet metal for the quarters bends not the actual flares itself. Im hoping that early/late spring i can can start tearing apart and making test fits for the extensions. Im also making sketches for as tail light conversion for a military tail light. Im planning on filling in the area left from the larger stock lights and then recess the new lights so that their flush like ona hummer. That one may take me a bit longer to do because i need to buy a good english wheel first.

Im not saying they are any good, but harbor freight has their english wheel with stand on sale right now. If I had the extra cash I would buy one. It would at least get you started in the art.

Get ready to lose some fingernails....

I have been pondering this for some time now and have realized that we do have quite a few limitations on how helpful these can be with the KJ. Maybe someone can get something from what I have so far.

1) As far as covering the cosmetics behind the fender flare... one properly bent piece of tubing could both conceal everything and give you an easy place to mount it from (at least on the front flare)... you would have to make a cover for the top of the turn signal.

2) While I am talking about turn signals... this brings up one of the big benefits for (strictly) off roading. If you were to make the flare up front shaped so that the very front was horizontal and high up (lose the transition to the turn signal), you could relocate the turn signal and have nothing blocking your front tire from any obstacle... add a narrower bumper and you could drive up whatever offset obstacle you like. (Note: make sure if you hit a deer it's dead center haha)

3) As far as stuffing a tire is concerned... we have too much sheet metal blocking our progress... the flares wouldn't help too much UNLESS you start moving the tires outward (backspacing anyone?).... but this hasn't been explored at all so who knows how much it would change.

4) For those of us with roof baskets... sturdy metal rear flares with a built in or flip-down step would be SWEEEEET!

Of course... I have considered that for trips to Moab (or anywhere without mud, gravel, or high opinion of paint)... just removing the flares altogether and putting in a piece of tubing to cover the mounting area would be cool... anyone with a lift willing to pop off their flares on one side and snap a pic? Please?

Ok so that all may be worthless... but something good should come out of this.

If you can find it there is a thread on here with pictures of a guy rebuilding a wrecked KJ. There is a picture of the front fender without a flair. Maybe the back also.

i saw the wheel that harbor freight had. Its actually not that bad. Just not what im looking for. I want one that i can run a bit thicker metal through. An i never thought about the step. Thats a great idea. Ill try and see if i can incorperate that it my design. I just have to figure out how to strengthen the surounding metal.
