Every time I change my oil, I find fresh oil dripping down the filter, along the filter drain channel, and onto the floor. It seems that no matter how tight (or loose) the filter is oil still seeps past the seal. I always clean around the area so I’m fairly certain it’s not residual oil after draining. I know of several people with the 3.7L that have this issue and the only solution is to put the Jeep on a lift to gain some leverage and really torque it down. I’ve never had this issue with any other engine but the 3.7L. Is there something I’m missing here?

Hmm, Ive never had trouble with mine and I only get it as tight as I can with one hand. If you needed, you could use a cup wrench and tighten it with a ratchet, just make sure you dont get it to tight.

I just changed my oils today as a matter of fact. :)

Yep, same here, except mine just weeps a bit. I clean the area and apply a light coat of oil around the rubber seal on the filter. I still end up with weeping.

I'm not loosing a lot of oil (I check regularly), so I don't worry about it. I'm not about to strip my threads on the plug by putting it on too tight either.

could you possibly have a gasket from an old oil filter stuck on it?

34 oil changes now and never had a problem, always take it up to where the gasket is touching and then 1/2 to 3/4 turn more no problems, look at the surface to make sure there are no cuts etc in the flange

The first thing to check is whether or not you have an old gasket stuck on the mounting surface. If not, get under there and check to see if you have any sharp edges or debris on your mounting surface that would interfere with the gasket sealing properly. If you don't have the means to do this, take it to your dealer and have them check. It's possible that the filter may have at one point been torqued down to hard and the threads on the inlet tube may be bent, preventing the gasket from sealing properly.

I have checked for pieces of gasket, etc. figuring they put the factory filters on with the jaws of life. The mounting surface is clean and the filters spin on and off freely. Even the dealers seem to have trouble keeping these things completely dry. It has the potential to stay dry, as long as you really torque it; about a full turn once seated. Just seems a little abnormal.

Well, if he's changing it every 3K miles, that works out to 102K on the odometer. Or 170K at 5K mile intervals. I'm guessing every 3K, since his sig says 2004. Assuming it was sold in 2003, that's 4.5 years or so, or about 23K a year.

Yup agreed...

I dont understand why people still buy into the 3-5k oil changes but if wasting money makes them happy then its all good I guess 8)
