Only the limiteds with premium package II aren't trail rated because that package comes with the 18-inch wheels they say aren't trail rated. The regular limited 4x4 comes with 17 inch wheels and is trail rated. I'm in the process of switching vehicles with chrysler because of a lemon law case against my ram. I'm looking into getting in a libby limited 4x4 so i've been reading a lot about them and found that out on the website that to be trail rated you can't have the 18inch wheels for some reason. So i'm probably just gonna get premium package I with the 17's.

It's just the wheels that aren't trail rated. I don't think any other part of the vehicle changed.

And it must just be those wheels because the new Wranglers are available with 18's now also. And they are still trail rated.

yep, it's a different 18" wheel on the Liberty. The Liberty wheel is 18 x 7, and the Wrangler is 18 x 7.5. Both say they are aluminium wheels, but the one for the Liberty states that its' not trail rated.

they probably didn't trail rated because of the lack of sidewall on the liberty 18inch. the new wrangler has 32in mud terrains where the liberty has 29in highway tires on the 18's.

go with 16s and a world of tires are available to you...much more limited selection with the 17s.

I just want the limited because I think the interior color and the fit and finish is nicer and I like the chrome grill look.

I got the limited because of the MyGIG (main reason) but if I would have known better I wouldn't have gotten the Premium II package, the freaking 18" wheels are killing me.

Is it possible to order that model/spec vehicle (08 Limited with Premium Group II) without getting the 18" wheels?

According to the build & price site you can't, but I don't know what kind of magic the dealership can/can't get away with.

When I ordered mine they told me I had to get the 18" wheels...sucks with the limited options available. I asked the dealership if I can put 17" wheels on they said yes and even if I lift it up to 3" it doesn't void any warranties, etc. I asked if I could go with 16" wheels they said know because of the front brakes...so unless I want to switch out the front brake system then I'm stuck with 17"...but it's better than 18". I'm hoping to get 17" this summer, maybe stick with my 18" for winter tires (Nokian tires).

That's misinformation they gave you.

The brakes aren't different on a limited vs. a sport. I would take a guess that they haven't changed the calipers to be that big in the KK. I bet You can fit any 16" rim as long as the backspacing and bolt pattern is correct. Easiest way is to go over to a friendly tire shop and have them mount up a 16" rim you like and see if it clears.

Just found this thread, now I am really bummed that I have the 18" wheels. Aside from not being trail rated, do the larger wheels also give you worse gas mileage? Has anyone taken their truck back to the dealer to swap the 18" wheels for the 17" (bought it less than a week ago)?

Called the dealer, they fed me some BS about the original wheels being tied to the VIN, so it may void the warranty by swapping the 18"s for the 17"s. He had no problem offering to sell me the 17"s though.

Is there anything that would prevent putting the larger sidewall tire (7.5) on the 18" rim?

One of the conditions I made to our dealer was I'd take a Limited, with the PG II but that they change out the 18" wheels for 17"s, and that they add on the Trail Rated badge. He said no problem, and that's what they did.

Now, maybe to swap your tires for 17" after the fact is a lot more complicated or, more likely, more costly to them. They'd have some slightly used 18" wheels they'd have to do something with and now that you've agreed to take your vehicle there is a lot less incentive for them to deal.

I suppose you could complain that you weren't made aware of the non-Trail Rated aspect of the 18" wheels, but I don't know how successful you'd be.

Good luck though!
