Hi all,

We recently picked up our 2006 CRD after having the turbo replaced at 42k miles. Fortunately we had purchased an extended Mopar warranty (Max-Care warranty) so it was covered minus a $100 deductible. The symptoms were a whistling/fluttering noise when going up hills at part throttle, general sluggishness off the line, and poor fuel economy. With the new turbocharger installed, the strange noises disappeared and it's got the low-end responsiveness back again.

Sadly, it seems like the poor fuel economy is still there. We got 21mpg on the last tank, much of it being highway driving. I also noticed today that the needle now sits dead-center on the temperature gauge. Previously, it was always one notch to the left of center. I wonder if the EGR is stuck open? I reapplied the ORM, but maybe there's still something up with the EGR... If the intake had enough oil-soot gunk in it to foul up a turbocharger, I wouldn't doubt that it's also had some deleterious effect on the EGR valve.

Is there a way to troubleshoot a slightly stuck open EGR? Should I plug in the MAF again and wait and see if it picks up a code?

- Chris

On your temperature guage. They "fixed" that with the BCM flash. Many new cars are programmed to be on dead center if it's in a normal range. You got all the latest flashes  Once they hook up it's all or nothing on them. My mileage sucks too. My highest tank was 25 and that was once. Most are 18 to 20. Every new flash on the engine and/or tranny seems to cut mileage. You can install a lift pump and get some more response back. If yours is sucking air bad it might get slightly better mileage, mine did, just enough to see. Maybe 1 mpg.

I've only had the F31, and I've always gotten about 19mpg before running the SEGR, now I get about 21 or 22. Did they ever tell you why the turbo failed? Bearings or Oil starvation? I always wonder if the sooted up oil could lead to turbo failure.

Before they started going wild with the flashes some early 05 high mileage drivers were getting 30ish on the highway.

One way to tell if the EGR is open is by monitoring the manifold air intake temp. I do this with the scangauge. Witht the EGR fully shut, and the engine fully warm, the air in the manifold is 30 deg F greater than ambient. If the EGR is open, itis 80 deg F greater.

I do the same thing. It's amazing how much hotter the intake air is with the EGR working. I had to take mine to the dealer and I hooked the MAF back up. It was 40 degrees outside, and the IA was reading 135 degrees!

Thanks Bill, I may have to pick up a Scangauge for this. I guess a valid experiment would be, if I don't see a significant drop in IAT when applying the ORM, I can assume the EGR is faulty?

I asked about this, and the response was that they didn't open it up or really examine it very closely, as DC's "STAR" technical hotline (their upper level dealer support line) requested the turbocharger be sent to them as-is for analysis.

after all the flashes & tc change I've still managed a few tanks over 30. One tank was running on twisty mountain roads where seldom the speed exceeded 50mph. Got 32+ with that tank. Most of the other high mileage tanks were going to and coming back from SW CO running a steady70 mph.

In city driving I'm still getting ~21 mpg.
