Hey I know that a bunch of your CRD owners are ex Jetta TDI owners and I was wonding if you could give me some suggestions for forums that are as good as this one is for information etc...

I just traded in my Rubicon for a Jetta and want to learn about it.

Later,
Dan

Just took the head of of my 96 Passat TDi today. Found both valve seats in cylinder, piston and head chewed up. Crown and coke making the day better.

C&C use to do wonders for me on days like that, but there were times any excuse would do.

ditto tdiclub.com

Lot of cross-over knowledge there. Love the Jetta, lot easier to work on than the CRD.

Roacman3700. What year is your tdi? If it's a PD then it requires a very special oil :? My son now ownes my 99.5 jetta tdi. Averaged 49.6 mpg for over 100k miles with two tanks in the 70's   I sure miss that with my CRD.

Hatchetman.
All you need is a head if I read your post correctly. There are places set up just for your situation. I bought new a 96 passat tdi wagon. Averaged 45 mpg for over 100k miles

Being retired the 20 I'm getting with my crd could be better but I can live with it

If you had my wife driving it, it would be killing you.

Sometimes I just almost cry when I get the fuel bill, but then I think she could be home making me miserable then it ain't so bad.

Oldnavy: Happy Holidays.

Question for a Mercedes man: should I buy a 1983 Mercedes 300 SD for $800? 300k Runs fine. Is it worth it to fool with or is it a miserable thing to work on? Kinda hankering for a grease-mobile project...but this puppy is old and parts might be an issue. Still, such a deal....

If you don't, I will. I've been trying to acquire an 80's diesel Mercedes in running condition for a reasonable price for a while now. Ideally I'd like a 190TD. Need something high mileage for my gf to drive when she's in town.

I would say yes as a general rule it is a good buy if it starts easy and runs good with a tranny that is solid I would say it is a steal.

Only real parts problems (expensive or hard to find or both) will be body parts and injectors. If you have good wrench skills even the injectors can be rebuilt with parts available from MB dealer if you know the part numbers. You can join fo free MB on line parts network and look up any part needed.

If you buy the car PM me and I will hook you up with that and the best forum for MB diesels.

TDI timing is much easier to set with the Ross Tech Vag Com than with out. I wish Uwe Ross would make a version for our CRDs.
