I have a thread going about my recent road trip, but I thought I would repeat my mpgs in this thread. I recorded the gallons and miles for each tank, but I think I missed one. Anyways, here are the numbers I got on the trip (on factory tires):

tank miles mpg notes
1 356 20.7 this was mainly on 70mph highways and also through nashville. We hit some hills in tennessee
2 326 19.8 my brother drove this tank. He was averaging 80-85 through georgia
3 354 21.9 this was through southern georgia and northern florida, 70mph zones and no real stops
4 278 23.1 southern part of florida and the keys, 70mph and 55 mph zones
5 342 22.5 driving around the keys. averaged about 50 mph in the keys
6 364 21.5 middle and upper florida, 70mph zones
7 323 20.8 georgia, 70 mph zones
8 354 20.1 tenn and part of kentucky, 70 mph zones

Not bad at all. What was the overall average on your whole trip ??

What was the highest highway MPG ?

Because I think I forgot to write down one tank, I am not sure of the overall mileage. With the numbers I have I am guessing somewhere around 21mpg. The highest mpg for a tank was the 23.1 mpg tank.

Anybody else have MPG reports for the KK?

Wife and I are thinking about trading in our CRD because the incentives are good enough and our payment would be quite a bit lower.

Don't trade the CRD...outright sell it...you will get much more...even on ebay than the trade-in value they will give you.

I only get 13.5 every time since I bought it. I have about 1600 miles now and the best I got was 16 when I went up skiing.

My driving consists mostly of city driving generally around 30-45 mph. I have tried taking it really easy and keeping the rpms as low as possible, but it is always the same.

I bought this thinking that with the more accurate mpg ratings that I would be ok. I am coming from a Toyota Tacoma which I loved and got 16 city and 20-22 hwy. And thats with a much more powerful engine.

Any ideas as to why my mileage would be so bad?

I have about 1600 miles and I do about 80% city right now and 20% highway. I have the off factory all terrain radials and I am averaging about 15 miles per gallon and my best was about 16 miles per gallon. I know that my mileage suffers as I am driving this vehicle in NY where it is cold (anywhere from single digits to freezing F) and sometimes snowy (I occassionally use 4wd for short stint) and the engine doesn't even get to optimal operating temperature until I am about 4 miles down the road. So I get to do that 2X a day and that is likely affecting my mileage. My commute to work is about 12 miles. So for about a third of the trip, the engine is running higher RPMs and not at optimal temps. I am trying to be careful about jackrabbit starts and such. Once the temps get up come spring summer, I expect to pick up at least 1-2 more miles per gallon. This cold temp scenario was similar to what happened in my previous Grand Cherokee and folks that I worked with who had KJs. I have yet to do a full tank on the highway.

First off, Welcome.... ok now to the subject... what octane are you running? and second, because colorado has the crappy winter fuel right now, you will loose some mpgs. also with 1600 miles, its just barely broken in. I have heard that some of the 3.5s don't fully brake in in tell 10000

I am running 85 octane, should I be running something else? The manual said to run regular, and here in Colorado that is 85. 10k miles for a break in sounds way way too long. I would think that it shouldn't be any more than the first couple thousand miles.

I have read on here that most of you seem to be getting better mileage, with the exception of the people that have added the good (heavier) tires. I was hoping to get 16 city and 20 hwy, now I realize that I cant expect to get that all the time especially with the Colorado snow and mountains, but for most of my commutes it would be nice.

I though colorado's 85 is considered 87 everywhere else and CO's 87 is considered 89 in other states, and CO's 91 is 93...

Got me.... Any one know?

EDIT:

FROM WIKI

In the Rocky Mountain (high altitude) states, 85 octane is the minimum octane and 91 is the maximum octane available in fuel. The reason for this is that in higher-altitude areas, a typical combustion engine draws in less air per cycle due to the reduced density of the atmosphere. This directly translates to reduced absolute compression in the cylinder, therefore deterring knock. It is safe to fill up a car with a carburetor that normally takes 87 AKI fuel at sea level with 85 AKI fuel in the mountains, but at sea level the fuel may cause damage to the engine.

Supposed to something like that due to our higher elevation.I would never run 85 octane in my KJ(tried once and it knocked real bad,had to add octane boost to get it to stop knocking),I always run premuim now and my KJ runs better, way better at 10,000 feet+ on those trails.

I get about 15.5 in the city, and about 20 on long trips via highway.

With gas prices at over $3/gallon, I save every way I can.

Ill try 87, but I cant imagine any of the octanes making that much of a difference in my mileage.

Oh to have gas prices that cheap! Imagine if it was a few cents under $4/gallon like here in Canada! The only thing to be thankful is we don't pay what Europeans pay ($5+/gallon).

At $3/gallon I'd be driving to the end of the driveway and back just to check the mail! :)
