This year our CRD took noticeable longer to start (3-4 seconds of cranking) during the winter and it would run very rough with tons of smoke and diesel clatter

Problem solved with the following:
Kennedy Lift Pump installed
Racor Fuel Filter installed
Omega Temp Probe installed

Hard start issue deinstalled

Other benefits included reduced turbo lag, quieter idle, and not having to worry about bleeding air from the system again. It was -7 deg this morning and our CRD fired up almost instantly-no block heater was used.

BTW, our fuel filter never leaked fuel from any of its plug ports. WIF and heater were plugged in at all times. 2200 ohm 1/2 watt resister used as temporary substitute for the temp probe sensor worked flawlessly.

How did you hookup the WIF sensor?

The OEM WIF sensor unscrews from the OEM filter and is easily threaded into a 1/4 inch port on the bottom of the the Racor 245 with a little external shaping so it can be screwed on without any interference from the Racor heater plug.

My install was based on http://liberty.eurekaboy.com/racor.htm website but I did not build a bracket to install the kennedy lift pump. Intstead, I mounted it using 4 inch bolts through the floorboards and through the "frame" the front legs of ear driver's seat mounts to. It is very sturdy and should last a long time. All drilled floor board holes were spray painted with primer and sealed with silicone to protect against rust and leakage. I'll get a shield fabricated later to protect it from road debris.

All wiring was soldered and cleaned up with heat shrink tubing and corroguated conduit and looks stock. I cut and trimmed the wiring from the Omega temp sensor and then soldered it to the heater plug that I twisted off of the stock temp probe.

Your filter setup sounds like just what I'm planning on doing. Some pictures WOULD be great if you have them

Sorry, no pics available. The website link in my previous post is more than sufficient for you to get an idea of the install.
