Here in upstate NY, the only place that sells bio-diesel near me switched to B5 for the winter. They sell B20 in the non-winter months.

I have had no problems with gelled fuel using B5, and it has got down below zero a few times.

It can't hurt to use an anti-gelling additive though when it gets cold.

We took my wife's TDI on a trip from Aurora, IL to Troy, MI on the first cold snap and both mornings the B-10 partly restricted the flow through the fuel filter and diminished power for about 20 miles until it got warmed up. Unlike our CRDs, my wife's TDI has no fuel heater so I suspect that is why it took longer to heat up and run full power. On equally cold mornings since neither the CRD or the TDI has had a problem with gelling. They must have adjusted the blend. I try to buy from truck stops when I can so I get good season blended fuel instead of the small service stations.

As far as the birds and wind power goes, I have not seen or heard of any birds being killed by wind farms in the Midwest, Northeast, or Denmark. I have heard many stories about Charles Manson and his plans to dump LSD into the California water supply. If he stored his stash in steel drums, or glass jugs with steel caps, the LSD may be leaking into the water supply and effecting the birds causing them to chase the prop blades and come to their demise :P :P

Find the LSD stash dispose of it and problem solved :!: :!:

To get back to the gel issue and how it ties into wind power. Wind mills cleaning up the grid can keep you block heater working properly, keep the engine compartment warmer so our CRDs can start, warm the fuel and prevent a gel stall in the middle of the road.

Here in Chattanooga I can get b20 at the pump all year. I had to buy some last week because I haven't had the time to make home brew. Anyway I noticed that the sticker on the pump said 20% bio and 80% 500ppm low sulfur diesel. Can LSD still be sold if mixed with bio?

They can still sell Low Sulfur Diesel (LSD sounds too 60s) and can for a few more years ( I forgot the cut off date for over the road use), big truck stops do sell both. since the older big rigs were designed to use LSD with the lousy 40 Cetaine, they run fine and the drivers feel they get more power and fuel economy.
But the law is clear that 2007 and newer over the road diesels must use ULSD.
Our CRDs can use either, but designed to run on 55 Cetaine which is why Bio blends of ULSD run better in them. Therefore, I prefer to use ULSD with a B10 BIO blend when I can get it. I have only once had a problem with B-10 in my wifes TDI when the first cold snap came along before the new blend was in the storage tanks and I had mild case of gelling that went away after 20 miles of driving and the fuel warmed up.
When I find a pump with B-20 or B-100, I will give it a try as long as the fuel looks clear and not cloudy.

CHevy06,

I grew up in Stanley, ND so I feel your pain. The coldest I remember it getting was -75 with the windchill. Almost all of the people I knew who had diesels also had hot boxes (basically one of those propane fired heaters that look like a jet engine on a dolly). When fuel would gel they would get the truck inside, dump Power Service in the tank, put the hot box in front of the truck and turn it on high and then wait for it to thaw out. 99.9% of the time this fixed the problem.

That is exactly what i did lol. It worked really well. Those space heaters work pretty good even though i had to go buy one.
