i believe any tint on the front windows in PA is illegal.. i have 35% on my front ones.. and had it on my older car.. and my parents have it on both their vehicles (a black caddy and black hummer).. and my sister had it on her neon and none of us have even been bothered. 35% is just enough to block the UV rays from destroying your car.. other peoples lights in your side mirror.. and make it look much better but you can still see the driver.. well sometimes

Yeah, here's one for ya; not tint related though. I was driving to Snowshoe to go skiing MLK weekend and got pulled over in WV for having to many lights illuminated on the front of my Jeep! I mounted 2 little cheap-o fog lights under my front bumper, I had those on as well as headlights and the driving lights (I don't want to hear the crap about driving lights and fog lights...don't care, I like the way it looks). You are only allowed 4 lights other than marker lights turned on in West Virgina. The cop was cool about it, only got a warning (probably since I'm from KY), but just a fyi. It really pissed me off cause it was the first time I had ever been pulled over!

Tim,

Bummer dude.

Might I suggest a Sticky for Modicfation Violations and Warnings? a place where members can post a warning of a citation they receive for any modification to their KJ's. Any Mod related citation otherer than speed related. Not a Venting platform but just a place for members to review their future mods to see if anybody has had any issues with Johnny Law.

Well the verdict is in. Just spoke to my dad who works for the magastrates office(go figure) and he told my dad I do not have to do anything with it, it was just a warning. HE also said that the cop who pulled me over has a 80% arrest rate for drugs and DUIs. All this guy does is drive around, look for people driving cars like mine, and pulls them over for the violations(tint in this case) and 80% of the time this guy finds the driver either having DUI, caqrrying drugs or has a warrant for an arrest. In short, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Glad you dont have to take the tint off! I cant stand getting in a car without tint after having it in my Jeep.

Ive got 20% on the front windows and a 6" 20% strip on the windshield. I feel like Im in my own little cocoon. 8)

If I ever get pulled over Ill just put the windows down first thing.

Sorry about your tint woes. That sucks. When I moved to VA from KY, a cop pulled me over for speeding (which I was) and told me, "You were speeding, but one of the main reasons I pulled you over is because your windows are tinted too dark." I (stupidly) commented, "I'm from Kentucky" and he goes, "Doesn't matter, not legal in Virginia." So, in case anyone is thinking about driving through VA, don't forget to stop at the border, strip the tint off your front windows and windshield, dismantle your radar detector and store it all in a locked box in the trunk (if you have one...if not, you're just hosed).

I never pulled the tint off my windows and was never pulled for it again. It was only 65% Titanium tint anyway. Give me a break.

VA used to have a medical tint exemption. If you could get a doctor to say that excess light was detrimental to you in any way, you could put (what I like to call) Kentucky Tint on your front windows. They got rid of that though.

In your case, I'd only think about de-tinting if the cop patrols an area that you frequent. If not, go on with your life tinted.

If your jeep is registered in VA then it falls under VA law, but if it was registered in KY then a VA cop can't give you a ticket for a VA tint law.

Yes it was a written ticket. It just sucks b.c. It has been on there since July and I've passed thousands of cops at day and at night and not one pulled me over, why now?

One thing it could be is, no kidding, it depends on what glasses the police person is wearing. My wife had a particular set of polarized sun glasses and she could look at a whole parking lot and see which ones had tint. In CA there is no tint allowed on the front window. We bought our CRD used and it came from NV and had a light tint on the front window, we had to remove it. CA cops will catch this evry time but wouldn't have bothered a car from out of state. It takes a good bit of work to get the tint off completely.

Sorry about the tint....but....if that is all this cop is doing and he has a 80% success rate....we need more like him!!! Everyone seems to complain when a cop is 'never around when ya need them'. I'd rather him pulling over the bad guys and getting them off the street instead of just writing up incident reports 'after' someone gets hurt.

So, to sum it all up, you got mad that a police officer was enforcing a law, add your editorial that "all the guy does drive around" enforcing other laws, and then you choose to continue to violate the law. Just so you know, "next time" that tint will still be illegal.

I find it strange that you came on here asking us about the tint first yet your dad works in the magistrates office and could have easily given you the word on the ticket and tint where most of us do not live in that state and don't know the states law.

find a doctor who can issue you a "needs shades due to eye condition" document, and that's it.

Actually in PA it is not that simple. I have 22% on my fronts to match the backs as well however I have plenty of experience with tint violations on my eclipse. I have been to court three times and have had the charges dropped all three. For anyone that has issues in the future. Do some research on state laws (this case my state PA) and compare them to the federal laws. I am at school so I don't have the paperwork here that I used but there is a federal law that supercedes the state laws. Also most of the cops quote something called "Table X" which is the actual paper in PA that says no aftermarket tint on side windows. However, that worksheet was given to inspection states for them to use while inspecting vehicles. Using the federal law, the fact that Table X is not a law for the police to use in the first place, and receipts showing I have had the vehicle inspected more then once since the tint was installed the three different judges ruled that I was a law abiding citizen and my vehicle passed all PA inspection codes shown by the sticker on the windshield. Just a thought :-)

In PA you can not have front windows tinted. You cannot have windshields tinted. The legal limit is 70% of light 30% tint. This is superceeded by factory stock conditions.

You weren't just in the wrong place at the wrong time. You did something illegal. You got caught. You are going to keep on doing something illegal. Simple as that. Just hope they dont impound your vehicle or drag you into court next time.

Edited to add: I apologize as after rereading it, it sounds harsh. It just came across to me that you were saying that this officer was just out looking to start trouble with law abiding citizens. I believe that he is doing us all a service by enforcing laws, no matter how dumb they may seem to you or I. He is doing his job because as a law enforment officer, his job is to enforce the laws, not debate them and judge whether he should enforce them or not. There is a reason for this law, and he a good officer by noticing and stopping you. He is an even greater officer because he let you go without a warning.

Again, I apologize, I simply have a great respect for those who put their lives on the line.

I beleive that PA law states something like as long as the car can be approched safely with the clear view of driver and passenger. to me this sounds like what ever the officer feels? hummmm PA and their not so clear laws. I had to scrape my tint one night several years back, that officer told me anything other than factory tint is not allowed. so who really knows check with DMV.

30% is the legal limit... thus that being said u really cant get 30 so u buy 35% i have friends that are state police and thats the Code on the tint law... 35% is fine now... common sense... when being pulled over roll down the windows and DUI checkpoint roll down the windows... just saves hassle..

This is really BIG business. I read a lenghtly article a couple of years ago about how this works in NY anyway. They claim that a lot of small towns up here would be really hurting without the ticket revenue. The State, County, Township, small town, and courts all get a percentage of the ticket $$$ and they are $100+ minimum ... It probably works the same in every State. Depends on who gives you the ticket. (State Trooper or County Sheriff or what)
Most small towns up here do not have police departments and still get ticket revenue depending on jurisdiction of where it is written.

As far as tints go, I'm leaving mine "factory tint" and when I want it darker, I'll put on my shades.
